Don't get me wrong, I appreciate nature and the role of ants in the ecosystem, but seeing these guys fighting makes me really relieved I'm not part of their microcosm.

@alexpsmith North American ant jealousy intensifies. Ya'll have so many fun ants down there. It's not fair. Raising a queen from these species is very rewarding. Their eyesight is so good that they are aware of you and come to expect that you've come to feed them.

@futurebird This almost makes me want to raise bull ants! But knowing me, I'd accidentally release the ten plagues of Egypt in my neighbourhood.

@alexpsmith These ants are really not the peaceful fungus farming sort.HUGE mandibles, for biting things extra hard.

@justafrog Yeah, I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of one of their bites.

@alexpsmith I've had fire ants go after me because I sat too close to their nest.Apparently these are worse? Do not want.

@justafrog These are bull ants, but still painful and venomous from what I've read. @futurebird is the expert, though.@iBlame You might like these ants, too!

@alexpsmith @justafrog @iBlame Bull ants have a very painful sting and will attempt to intimidate vertebrates who get too close to their nest by running at them. But, they are fundamentally shy. Here is a video that give you an idea of their "personality"https://sauropods.win/@futurebird/111957887835117702

@myrmepropagandist Oh, cool video! I'm a bit surprised they don't freak out more at having a light shine into the inside of their home.

@dynamic Yeah, that was interesting to me. My carpenter ants, which do not have as good eyesight as the bull ants freak out if the light changes too quickly. But their nests tend to have large entrances, so maybe they are accustomed to a little sun filtering down into the tunnels? Whereas the carpenter ants only get sudden light changes if something has broken their log.

@futurebird @alexpsmith @justafrog @iBlame Do not sit on their nests, though. Girl in my class made that mistake in primary school and I have not forgotten it.

@iBlame @alexpsmith @justafrog I'll have a word with them... but I think they have their little hearts set on "ant mechs" that can "flatten cities" whatever that means... anyway they are studying electronics and metallurgy and something called "tiny UI design"
