https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYeexgFAvPkI found it to be a good description. More about gamedev for me then art, but it's applicable to any obsession."Another thing when it comes to spending all your time on creative work is that society forces you to. Opportunities are rare, pay is terrible, the work is incredibly under appreciated, and demands are extraordinary. There are always other desperate creators waiting to take your place. You have no choice but to go all in."

@inertia stop trying to do a hobby as a career and society won’t “force” you to at all.

@inertia It's a fascinating, if critically flawed argument. He's assuming that artwork, intended to make it look like art is terrible, is reality. It's very close to reality, but it's framing the ideology that the artist isolates themself. I don't have anyone I can think of or care for right now, just automobiles and empty streets. Artists do isolate themselves, but other people also suck: isolating them needlessly, and there's nothing the artist can do about it.

@skybrook >assuming that artwork, intended to make it look like art is terrible, is realitywot> isolating them needlessly, and there's nothing the artist can do about it.Sure? I guess. But the main point was that *obsessions* leads to isolation. If you don't make an effort to interact with other people, because you are obsessively working on something, you will become isolated. And who is more susceptible to obsession than artists?

@inertia What I mean is obsessions aren't the problem, usually. Most people (even artists) aren't obsessed like that, but they're still isolated. The movie wanted to make it look like artists do it to themselves, when the reality is less stark than the completely insane caricature of a main character.

@skybrook You are trying to tell me that people avoid creators? That's also stupid. I think having some skill makes people more interesting and I would want to hang out with them. But aquiring a skill takes time. Time away from socializing which can lead to isolation.

@inertia I'm trying to tell you that people avoid *everyone.* We've never been more alone in all of recorded history. All those creators have us watching TV, consuming product, driving to work, never touching grass, and that suits our rulers just fine. A plague of loneliness. It's true an artist's obligations do make matters even worse, but it's not just their fault.

@skybrook well yeah. Didn't follow that we were talking about society as a whole. This has nothing to do with the video, but you are right. Technology has made us all more isolated, but also more connected in a weird simulacrum of the real thing.I have no numbers for this, but maybe this is causing more people to do art, youtube, gamedev, music, any of these creative things? Less socializing = more time. And being a creator is the most valued thing online. (and lucrative too)

@skybrook I'd say so. Brony has a mix of Waifu culture (compensation for a lack of meaningful romantic relationships), an idealized reality (compensation for how shitty everything is IRL) and a community online (compensation for loneliness).I'd say this fandom will end when things IRL improve. But they won't, soooo. yay?

@inertia @skybrook I doubt it, if things get better the fandom will just get more consumerist (which is the big part you left out, the collector community)

@skybrook And yes, it's absolutly self inflicted. We all only have 24h in a day.The way we choose to spend our time is on us. And you absolutely can not be going out all the time hanging out and learn a difficult skill at the same time. Or the other way around, someone who like to hang out wouldn't be attracted to skill that requires sitting alone in your room all day. Thus, all introversion is a very common trait among artists.

@sapphire @skybrook I wasn't aware there was a lot of collection going on. Collectors are usually motivated by nostalgia, no? The show isn't thaaat old.

@sapphire @skybrook It's not motivated by collecting and preserving. This is new stuff that actually gets to live outside the original packaging. The motivation is different. No one there wants to own a plushy of every character.

@sapphire @skybrook yeah, I guess. I don't really care about the role of consumerism in the future of the fandom.

@inertia @skybrook whether or not you personally care doesn't change my point that its a major part of the fandom and as things get better, people will buy more thingsEspecially good for the fandom because Hasbro is intent on slamming their dick in the car door instead of making merch for suspiciously wealthy horsefuckers
