Anyone missing a convertible in #BigSur #California ?It looks like it's been there at least a few years. The brush has grown up around it. I'm a bit surprised they haven't winched it out of there yet.@ai6yr any thoughts on who might know what's going on with this car? πŸ€”

My initial call to the local California Highway Patrol office went to an answering machine than said its message and then hung up on me. So I guess I'll call the statewide non emergency number next.@ai6yr

@ai6yr calling the general number got me through to the local dispatch. They took my info and the details of the location and vehicle. They're going to route it to a local officer and they'll call me back with any follow-up questions. But otherwise I might not hear anything else about the situation.I did tell them I've got photos so maybe they'll be interested enough to call me back and have me email them.

@chris_bloke @ai6yr @ixdy a buddy of mine passed away in his mid 80s in 2019. He worked for the California DMV as a programmer for many years. He was there when the original COBOL code was written and was still maintaining it up until a month or two before his death. I often wonder if they ever backfilled his position or if the entire California DMV computer system is teetering on the brink of collapse and no one has realized it yet.

@douglasvb @chris_bloke @ixdy Based on my conversation with a lady at the AAA who does the DMV transactions last year, it's basically untouchable code. i.e. you can't renew your registration inside the DMV system before 30 days or 45 days or whatever, even though they send you a notice earlier than that. So, INSTEAD, they pile up a pile of paper and enter it when the system allows them to LOL.

@douglasvb @ai6yr @ixdy reminds me of Metro Trains back in Melbourne who in the early 2000s realised that PDP-11's weren't a long term solution and so upgraded to PDP-11 emulators with PDP-11<->PC interface boards running on Windows NT.

@chris_bloke @ai6yr @ixdy as a follow up to the posts a few months back about the car we saw over the side of the road in #BigSur #California... It's still there and it seems to have gained a faded white X on its roof.

@chris_bloke @ai6yr @ixdy yup I believe that's correct. I wonder how often it gets called in. I'm surprised they haven't tried to recover it. It looks like a pretty simple straight but long pull up to the road through the brush.

@ai6yr @chris_bloke @ixdy it's over and hour from the nearest tow yard and they'd have to shut the highway down while retrieving it so my guess is it's not a priority. It would be good practice though for the national guard to air lift out of there.

@douglasvb @ai6yr @chris_bloke @ixdy there is a reconstructed zeppelin interior at the old factory in Germany - well worth a visit if you're in the area. A couple modern companies (such as Flying Whales in France) are looking at heavy lifting with airships for off grid delivery and retrieval.
