Between Boston Dynamics and Tesla effective robots are very close.

@judgedread Androids. purpose built robots have been effective for a long time.

@judgedread Sorry they arent cool to the scifi enthusiasts but a six axis or scara on a wheeled platform is much easier in a large number of applications. cobots kind of failed in many areas because of safety concerns. there are too many idiots funding these and driving hype in the Android space. We may see a drop off before we see an eventual wide adoption

@alchemy An android can seamlessly take over human work and move through human optimized spaces and use human tools. That's why so many companies are working on them.

@judgedread I get that but we use humans in places are not optimal for humans. Square peg round hole and now just getting a better square peg. Definitely some places an android will be the best fit but they are being over hyped. MBAs chase these shiny things then screw up implementation. BD and tesla are struggling for profitability

@alchemy Each specialized job would require a custom robot, therefore small production run, therefore expensive.General purpose android capable of all human movement and with a good enough AI is the most scalable solution.

@judgedread just custom tool heads that can be changed. a mobile platform and a couple 6axis can do mosy of what humans do with better stability. i agree in general with you but i expect this first roll out will be flubbed because of the people involved but after the hype wears off the right people will make it a sustainable market segment. most jobs though are highly specialized and so a specialized robot will be used at scale

@alchemy Number 5 from Short Circuit with more human-like hands would be more stable but it can't climb stairs.
