@feditips @shalien @Gargron it's a character limit. it's not that deep.if someone is aware that such a limit is a thing (I guess normie mastodon ppl may not), then they will change instances to one that has a longer character limit.Maybe they will even figure out how to set up their own instance

You might not even notice that half of the epic novel written by a hubzilla user has just been lost in space.Like yeah it's not a hardcoded twitter-style size limit but it can still bite you when dealing with large blog style posts from the greater fedi.

@coolbean @feditips @aliceif and what of I want, as a server administrator and fedi software user , that the posts received by my instance have a maximum character limit for any given reason, let's say for example moderation. Since I can go over the advised default limit, I should be free also to use it and even go under it. It's a matter of personal taste.

@feditips It's not the admins that are stuck in the past. It's Eugen. We have to edit the code and recompile to increase the character limit, which is crazy. If it were just a simple config setting, nearly everyone would have it increased.

Collapsing my ideas down into tiny, bitesize chunks (each shareable on their own) helps me to clarify my own thinking, and also stops me ranting into the wilderness before I've taken the time to consider sparser, more disciplined and impactful sentences.Because some folks hate epic threads, I always aim for a maximum of four installments. So far, my longest has been five.

@feditips @kkarhan Let's replace hashtags with a field that denotes the "topics" under which a post should be broadcast.The topic names can follow a hierarchical structure, with . as depth separators, say, something general about GNU/Linux might go with "comp.os.linux.misc". Something about retrocomputing could be tagged "alt.folklore.computers".

@feditips I'm honestly surprised that I'm not seeing widespread use of text as images with alt text to at least get more chars in Mastodon. (AFAIK, alt text has a larger limit, more than twice the post limit, and the image itself of course won't enforce any limit, other than possibly applying lossy compression)#Mastodon

@aliceif @feditips @ApostateEnglishman Also not a native speaker, I find character limit helpful in keeping my thoughts consistent — it makes me avoid more spacious descriptions and stay on point. I have my own instance that I sometimes use for longer-form replies and I know from practice that what was five 500 character posts won't become one 2500 character one if I lift the limit, it becomes three 5000 character ones 😂
