One of the unsung heroes of Bluesky’s success is Dominic Tarr, whose #Scuttlebutt protocol was an inspiration for Bluesky CTO @pfrazee.com (the first dev to join Dominic in 2014). Some of those P2P learnings from Scuttlebutt eventually made their way to Bluesky. https://thenewstack.io/how-bluesky-was-influenced-by-scuttlebutt-a-p2p-protocol/ #P2P #DecentralizedWeb

@ricmac Except that #Bluesky is the complete antithesis of #Scuttlebutt … centralized closed system.

(1/2)@mcepl> that Bluesky is the complete antithesis of Scuttlebutt … centralized closed systemCentralised, yes. Closed no, at least for now.But the BlueSky team are openly planning around the risk of future iterations of the company circling the wagons and excluding third-parties,using that centralisation. Just as Titter did before them.https://dustycloud.org/blog/how-decentralized-is-bluesky/@ricmac

(2/2)I'm biased to think the fediverse is the better long term choice. But @cwebber's "message passing" vs "shared heap" analysis has me questioning my assumptions.A Jabber Stan engaged me in the usual Two Minutes Hate against Matrix recently, arguing that XMPP is a "message passing" protocol, and Matrix a "shared heap". Yet AFAICT Matrix is, like ActivityPub, genuinely decentralised, and federated.Am I missing something? Or is the Stan just wrong in this analysis?

@strypey technically, "fediverse" could work like scuttlebutt and literally replace the needs for any other async comm protocol with the extra unique beauty of ssb! but the world still don't have enough devs/resource to make it work as such, like bsky do. matrix never created anything new, as far as i can tell, and adds nearly nothing to this topic.but who cares?!in practice i will still focus on fucking telegram, because ux matters to the people i want/need to connect to!

@cregox > matrix never created anything newFederated public chat rooms, and E2EE private federated chat rooms? Where were these available before Matrix?
