You know what? I'm gonna share ALL my #LinuxNewbie struggles - even the embarrassing fiascos - in case they may help fellow newbies.Today's face palm moment: I spent over 30 minutes struggling with the copy and paste shortcuts. Yes, I'm aware on Linux they are Ctrl + Shift + C and Ctrl + Shift + V... but nothing worked.I even tried a second keyboard, thinking my Italian QWERTY was to blame. Same thing with my US Bluetooth keyboard... until I realized: I needed to turn on the caps lock too 🤦♀️

@_elena It’s not just you – copy and paste on Linux is a nightmare (wait until you find out how many apps have their own copy/paste buffers which they don’t share with other apps by default). But full points for persisting.

@damonism whaaat?!? 🤯 I was not aware of that, so THANK YOU for the heads-up.I basically get in trouble every 10 seconds because I mindlessly use Mac shortcuts... and strange/unintended things invariably happen 😂

@_elena I suspect it comes from a legacy of Unix being a bunch of small terminal programs with a graphical interface, and concept of a Universal clipboard, only coming much later. But what it means in practice is I have used Linux on and off for 30 years and I still have no idea how to copy from Emacs and paste into another app (see, for eg https://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/CopyAndPaste).

@damonism > I still have no idea how to copy from Emacs and paste into another appYMMV based on the specific desktop environment and apps you're using, but ...In my experience, all cut'n'pasting in desktop GNU/Linux is* Bash terminal: CTRL-SHIFT-C to copy and CTRL-SHIFT-V to paste* Everything else: CTRL-c to copy, CTRL-v to pasteCan you tell me exactly which apps on which distro don't fit this pattern?#GNULinux #DestopGNU@_elena

@_elena Also there is an app (I think it’s gnome-tweak-tool) that, if you’re using a gnome-based desktop, will let you swap ctrl and cmd keys, so in apps that have somewhat sensible copy and paste keys, you can use cmd-c and cmd-v instead of control. This makes life much easier as a Mac user.

@_elena> I'm in Ubuntu (the latest version)I've mostly used Ubuntu derivatives. Especially Trisquel, which I recommend to anyone whose graphics and WiFi chips can run without proprietary blobs. Also spent time on Mint and LMDE.> I was trying to copy text from Vivaldi and paste it into Terminal. I was pressing Shift + Ctrl + c and Shift + Ctrl + vWhat I would expect to work is CTRL+c in Vivaldi, and CTRL+SHIFT+V in Terminal. Caps lock should reverse everything, not fix it. Maybe a bug?

@_elena Just out of curiosity, are you on the latest LTS (24.04) or on the latest release (24.10)?

@strypey I need to check - someone far more advanced than me here suggested the issue could be with Vivaldi (since I was attempting to copy from there)

@strypey the thing that blows my mind is that depending on the Linux distro you're on and/or the software you're using, the shortcuts are different 🤯

@rlounsbury thank you Ryan. Today I learned that depending on the distro and/or the application you can have different shortcuts for the most basic commands and I’ve been like this 🤯 ever since 😆

@_elena wrt copy/paste, the only exception i know is terminal needing ctrl+shift+c instead of ctrl+c (and similar for x and v). As far as I understand, I could be wrong on details, but the overall educated guess I make; The reason is some backwards compatibility from way back. ctrl was used for control operations like make the computer do a "beep" sound, or clear screen, etc. On unix (and linux was basically a unix clone) ctrl+c is used in the terminal for sending a termination signal to the active program (I expect this also be the case on Mac btw, bc that's also a Unix system). But then graphical desktop environments came and ctrl+c/ctrl+v started to become popular for copy/past, and linux desktop environments started using that too. Of course that gives conflicts with existing behaviour in the terminal, and it seems people generally kept existing behaviour for the terminal application. And to allow copy-paste, they used ctrl+shift+c instead in this specific situation.Applications can override keyboard shortcuts, I don't think that's a linux specific thing. It's just that this is generally not done for well known shortcuts. Here seems to be an exception due to legacy reasons. There's other copy-paste options too in linux, there's basically two clip boards, but that's its own separate thing. This explanation doesn't make the situation better, but maybe it softens the 🤯 a bit :blobfoxlaughsweat: @rlounsbury

@_elena > someone far more advanced than me here suggested the issue could be with VivaldiIt's possible. Vivaldi is proprietary rebranding of Chromium so I wouldn't use it myself. LibreWolf is pretty good.

@ilja thank you for the thoughtful explanation ilja - yes, it makes sense even from the POV of a total Linux newbie.Unrelated, but I think you’re the first person who mentioned YunoHost to me and really encouraged me to take the plunge, so many many thanks (I think I already thanked you for this, but I enjoy YunoHost so much, I may thank you again many many times) 🤗

@_elena getting thankies is always nice, so i'll take them with much pleasure :blobfoxsnuggle: I honestly don't know where I would be if it wasn't for fedi, yunohost, and the many people who inspired and helped me along the way. I was already in my late 20's when I got into this whole IT/Free Software thing as a way to find a better alternative than what the big-tech world wants us to have, so I do remember how daunting it all seemed back then. It's a big world, but there's also so many people sharing so much and it's amazing how fast you can reach goals who at one point seemed so unatainable.
