Fuck I love the Pixies.I understood by the mid-1990s that they had caché. But I don't think I fully *got* the understated genius of Surfer Rosa and Doolittle until I finally watched Fight Club, years after its release. Hearing the climax of Where is my Mind, as financial records buildings exploded in the background, was undeniably epic.Often categorised as grunge, but I associate them more with artpunk like Sonic Youth. Stuff filed as "alternative" in 1990s record shops.#music #ThePixies

(2/2)Cannonball is a a legendary, jazzy-funky, "alternative rock" track from the early 1990s. The first single off the 1993 album Last Splash.I can't do it justice better than the anonymous Wikipedian who wrote;"The track's drum rhythm and trademark bubbling bass line signal the start of the song. A slithering guitar lick skips the above its rhythm section before being overtaken by the high, squealing feedback of crunching guitar."Preach.

@strypey amazing band. Saw them in Dallas around that time. They played a great show. Talked a lot. Had stories. Was cool.

I'm listening to Cannonball again, for about the fourth time tonight. I just never get sick of that plucky bassline, the shuffling drums, that sick little slide guitar. Then Kim and Kelley singing sweetly, and squalling uproariously through the distortion of the harmonica mic. It's a glorious piece of music.

It's a glorious piece of music. The mic check intro sets up the fun, offbeat arrangement, and the fact that they faithfully reproduce the intro in live performances is a testament to their musicianship.

@strypey Slim Dunlap (who died recently) had a fun little mash-up about where he was singing Wabash Cannonball while his band was playing the Breeders Cannonball. I'll let Slim tell you the tale followed by the tune:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdeW594MPlk
