The first Frost Punk was kinda amazing in the way it added a story to a resource management/RTS style game, in a way that didn't really get in the way .. and even added to the game. It didn't have multiple missions that didn't build on each other like the Warcraft/C&C model. It's one difficult main story that takes several plays to beat. Xenoblade I, amazing story but it's made totally unenjoyable by the shitty game engine.I haven't played Frostpunk 2, but I have a feeling someone up the chain of command at that studio saw "Project 8" depending on the same really shitty stories that are bombing all over the place right now and decided to cut off that sunk cost.

@Rasterman I played Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 to completion, back to back. They're "narrative-driven" and "story-rich" games, from before the times when Bioware was packed to the back teeth with troons and other varieties of degenerate faggots with an undying hatred for Whites. I didn't check to see if those games were smash hits as far as sales numbers go, but they're very fondly remembered many years after their release, and people still play them and find them to be enjoyable.

@BrokenSword What matters to me is that I remember playing KOTOR2, not watching or reading it. Same with my top 2 games, Planescape: Torment and Deus Ex. Especially the former, which is full of text, but you still get to play a DnD RPG.Youngsters lost their shit with Disco Elysium because it had choices that mattered. Then I saw the game doesn't even offer combat. There's a spiritual sequel to Torment that's turn-based, but like Pillars of Eternity, fighting does not award you XP. It turns out that especially with the Unreal Engine there are many graphical features that are left on by default by devs which they clearly didn't know about which are causing the FPS for a lot of games to completely tank.Instead of acknowledging this and fixing it which would literally take them checking a box and doing a bit of tweaking to the effects they want they pretend gamers need better PCs. Steam review pages are now becoming Indian and bot call centres where you have people posting up complaints and they get a generic copy-pasted response back. I really think that Valve should be banning publishers and companies that pull that crap.

So there's this youtuber who's covering that and going into autistic detail. Apparently it's a mix of things, some of it is back end garbage, but all of the back end garbage can be turned off in the project if devs want to. However you have to know it's there in the first place to deal with it all.Most modern AAA devs are proving they're incredibly bad at their jobs and at best can only do a few front end design jobs or some photogrammetry and that's how they make the majority of their 'content'.
