FAIR now has many followers on Mastodon on BlueSky--3.5k on each. We're going to be posting to both sites for the foreseeable future; Mastodon is the kind of decentralized, nonprofit platform FAIR has always called for, but BlueSky is the Twitter replacement the world desperately needs.

@FAIR I get this. kill X as fast as possible. but longterm, we need everyone on the fedi. we need news outlets and govts to run their own servers for their staff, so that nobody can prevent their work from going viral.a world where everybody is on the #SocialWeb means an end to the power of money to decide what people know and pay attention to. where we the people decide that. I know of nothing more important to making all the other improvements possible. #AttentionDemocracy

@wjmaggos @FAIR As much as pre-X Twitter gave to me in the late '00s, both personally and professionally, at this point I feel like Twitter was a cautionary tale. Basically, "yes, we *can* do this, technically, but it probably isn't a good idea to do so. "I agree that Bluesky, in some lovely ways, currently *feels* more like the Twitter that was, but I'm not at all sure that's a good thing.

@whitneymcn @FAIR can you elaborate?I do think we're also going to need to up our collective game in being critical of what we consume so that we don't share crap, but that we ever thought something was "news" because mass media owners said so was also wrongheaded imo. society advanced through word of mouth forever. what's true and valuable would be most shared. we need higher journalistic standards in new media and we must learn to not jump to share stuff too quickly that triggers us.

@wjmaggos @FAIR The idea of a "global town square" seemed compelling -- transformational, even -- but, in my view, Twitter (and Facebook, for that matter) ended up illustrating that it's not possible for an individual to communicate with the whole world in anything the than a broadcast manner, which doesn't feel like a change to me. I'm not, and will never have the same potential reach with the Metaverse that I did with more centralized social media, and I think that may be a net positive.

@wjmaggos @FAIR I have the same ability to encounter interesting people, which is great, but I personally also have a smaller possibility of encountering a number of people that I simply can't deal with.

@whitneymcn @FAIR I'm not sure I'm following. if you're just saying you prefer having less people here, I understand that but disagree. and there's nothing about this place that precludes everybody being here but also everybody only seeing what they want because there are no ads or algos and we can control what servers we're on so that we're not connected to too many other or ones we don't like. it can be both "the place for news etc" and your little community.

@wjmaggos @FAIR I think what I'm saying is that I don't think -- at this point, at least -- that it's realistic to have a global, social "place for news."I'm mostly saying that I, personally, prefer a smaller scale "social network" at this point, but I'm also saying that I genuinely don't think that the basic idea of "if everyone just were on a single 'social network', they'd understand one another better and work everything out" is a realistic goal for social networking software.

@whitneymcn @FAIR I think it would help but my bigger hope is in how it could displace the power of money over the public square. people still think a newspaper or cable news channel is where to get their news. or some let the youtube algo keep feeding them stuff. the potential here is to cultivate a diverse and smart human social graph that feeds the best articles, podcasts and videos to us. that's a much better electorate. but we're only starting on that path re tech, payments and education.
