@futurebird That actually sounds like "summer" in my house. 😀

@wjmaggos @FAIR As much as pre-X Twitter gave to me in the late '00s, both personally and professionally, at this point I feel like Twitter was a cautionary tale. Basically, "yes, we *can* do this, technically, but it probably isn't a good idea to do so. "I agree that Bluesky, in some lovely ways, currently *feels* more like the Twitter that was, but I'm not at all sure that's a good thing.

@wjmaggos @FAIR The idea of a "global town square" seemed compelling -- transformational, even -- but, in my view, Twitter (and Facebook, for that matter) ended up illustrating that it's not possible for an individual to communicate with the whole world in anything the than a broadcast manner, which doesn't feel like a change to me. I'm not, and will never have the same potential reach with the Metaverse that I did with more centralized social media, and I think that may be a net positive.

@wjmaggos @FAIR I have the same ability to encounter interesting people, which is great, but I personally also have a smaller possibility of encountering a number of people that I simply can't deal with.

@wjmaggos @FAIR I think what I'm saying is that I don't think -- at this point, at least -- that it's realistic to have a global, social "place for news."I'm mostly saying that I, personally, prefer a smaller scale "social network" at this point, but I'm also saying that I genuinely don't think that the basic idea of "if everyone just were on a single 'social network', they'd understand one another better and work everything out" is a realistic goal for social networking software.

@futurebird An edge case, but my understanding is that file name *extensions* and file *types* can still be entirely different, so seeing a .JPEG file extension could create a false sense of confidence in what one is going to get.

@futurebird As late as 2000, I convinced an IT team to let me continue running Pine as my email client; I get it, I think.

@futurebird The thing I'd miss is casual discovery: I found the bloomScrolling hashtag, for example, because someone in my feed used it. That could be addressed in a variety of ways, of course, but I do like that side of it right now.

I was literally talking with my mother today about "cultural" vs. observant religious identity. This image sums up my personal situation from so many different angles.

@futurebird I will say that my kids seem to view both gender and sexuality with much less of a purely binary perspective than I had at their age. I think and hope that may be part of a broader trend?

@Nonilex That is...unsettling to hear. Both the action, and the started reasoning underlying the action.

@0xabad1dea At least for the linguists I know, their laptops are generally owned by the institutions they work for, and academic IT tends to be super sensitive to "disifiguring" of institution assets. That said, I've seen a "my books smell good" sticker on a linguistics professor's laptop, so dunno.

@foone When I said "look, you probably don't need 32 megs of RAM unless you're doing some pretty insane graphics stuff" I wasn't wrong. It was just quite some years ago, now.

@Nonilex This is the thing about electing a POTUS who genuinely thinks that his reality TV show host experience is somehow relevant to being POTUS.He just thinks that the writers and producers will figure it out before the next episode.

As far as I can tell, the only reason we still have paper clips in our house is that sometimes electronic devices need to be hard reset.

@ricci I agree with this statement, but at the same time, in my own life I have more regrets about things I *didn't* do than about things I did.

@futurebird Our most recent family cats were...well, let's just say "not part of the cat science core research team," but I firmly believe that there *is* a cat science core research team.

@foone I'm honestly a little surprised it's that small. 2018-2023 was an extremely long decade.
