One would think all the people now experiencing the frustration of managing multiple accounts or continual migration between #xitter, #threads and #bluesky would convince them of the value of a truly open protocol. do they know that only #ActivityPub truly promises this reality today?

@wjmaggos I keep seeing these posts crop up, and I always ask the clients and it comes down to a couple of things. The numbers aren't in activitypubs favour. Hovering around the million mark puts off many, especially when bluesky is now around 25-30 million and threads which can federate is at 300 million. Next is the choice of an instance. That really puts people off when that is hidden by the others so they don't have to mess around. I am also seeing mastodon tail off again...

@3dcandy it's a chicken and egg problem imo. if we had the numbers, people would put in the effort to figure it out and explain it to people better. there'd be plenty of instances focused around locality that would make the decision easier. we'd have more development of alternatives to mastodon that would be enticing. if we had those things first, we'd grow faster. I think being able to be here but have the audience of threads will be huge, someday. we're inevitable but maybe after I'm dead.

@wjmaggos @3dcandy I think you are underestimating the human confusion that choosing a server causes. If a decision is required and it's unclear what the consequences of the decision are, then many many people will simply avoid the decision.
