I have reduced the time I spend following politics to an extreme degree and I feel much better. I have more time for my own projects and I feel like the ways that I’m engaging in political actions, however small, are just as well informed. So much news is just six guys who keep repeating “It could be A or B or even Q. Who knows. Stay tuned.” over and over. You think they will do an analysis and give you a prediction but they are so bad at doing that. Huge waste of time. 10/10 do recommend

The actual “news” could often be reduced to maybe five or six simple sentences if you remove all of the opinions and speculation and just list what is known. In theory a political expert with more information could speculate in ways that might offer something— but this isn’t most of what is going on. That’s why so much news, even serious news revolves around personalities: our reality show characters. It’s like that game “Damage” invented by Ian M. Banks— and we are all “motties” AND “lives”

@futurebird What about political ant news? Did you see what the new queen has proposed for relocation plans? She didn't even bother listening to her advisors.

@futurebird US politics coverage is dominated by doomscrollers who can’t/wont do anything about any given issue (but want to make you feel bad about it), perpetual horse-race coverage enthusiasts, and scoop merchants who make whatever their current beat is seem like the biggest thing in the world. You’re better informed consuming less because there’s so much noise and useless anxiety-inducing hype.

@futurebird I did the same following the election and I feel much better too. A headline is generally all you need to understand. It’s important to keep this propaganda at arms length. They want you all crazy, so do the opposite.

Before this election I thought this tendency to turn politicians into characters was, if not exactly harmless, at least unavoidable and not worth fighting. Maybe that’s just how people stay engaged? But now I can’t stand it. “Trump humiliates Elon” isn’t news it’s fan fiction. And why would anyone be a fan of any of this? in the background there is real suffering. Lives lost statistics we don’t dare fully process.

@futurebird there’s been a thing going around about how pro wrestling explains trump starting at least on Twitter since his first election and more recently in news articles, and it has helped me _so much_ to understand what’s going on.https://www.lunduniversity.lu.se/article/how-trump-turned-elections-wrestling-match

@futurebird fan fiction is spot on. Too much political “news” is “X said Y this is will play out well/badly in key Z demographic in the upcoming election” pronounced by someone who’s likely never met a person from Z demographic in their life. It’s all get anxious and stay tuned for more. These things though, have real world consequences so you have to find a way to keep up without becoming caught up

@futurebird i’m coming to this realization myself. and even though i’ve moved to a much less toxic social network, most of my connections here are weak (i don’t have much contact with the people here outside of the bubble) and i catch vibes too easily.gotta be centered and healthy in my own head space before i listen to other people opinions otherwise it’s too easy to just take them on subconsciously (or be irritated by them subconsciously). In practice this means not spending too much time here either.thanks for the insight. Have an awesome day!

@futurebird I'm sure you have seen it, but https://whatthefuckjusthappenedtoday.com/ is still going strong, creating 5-6 sentence summaries of the news each day. (They splice them together with semicolons and call it "today in one sentence" but really it's 5-6.) You can get it as an email newsletter. Most days that is all the news I feel I need. Once a week I get a longer email newsletter (actually split up into a few emails) from the The Weekly Sift, which does include some analysis. https://weeklysift.com/

@futurebird I think that's the way a lot of the world fundamentally understands politics. As narrative with main characters and NPCs.I started thinking about Trump rallies as horrifically twisted drag shows last night and I don't have anything really clear to say about that yet but I think there's something there.

@futurebird I totally agree, myrmepropagandist. What’s going on between TFG and Musk may get silly, but compared to the plight of others, those two inevitable feud is laughable…to say the least. I mean, the only suffering TFG and Musk know of is seeing others suffer. And they are the cause…

@futurebird I stopped watching "news" on TV years ago, because here in Romania they're all paid in some form by the major political parties.Instead, I resorted to only watching Starea Nației (State of the Nation), a long-running show that was on mainstream news before being kicked out because PSD, one of the parties, paid the news company to do it. So much for "freedom". In recent times, he's received death threats and before being kicked out from the show on the TV program, his wife was also fired by PSD a few days before, in an effort to get him off air.Anyway, the host is charismatic, has many live streams (especially now, when we're in the middle of elections) and shows, and has genuinely informative takes and analyses on what's going on, they're all on YT but they're also building their own platform because YT's algorithm also seems to suppress the videos.I'm also watching Recorder and reading news from G4Media, both are two other independent, unbiased news sources.

@futurebird I've done much the same and for the same reasons. Back when the Fairness Doctrine required news outlets to balance their reporting, you could turn on Cronkite and he'd just give you the news, not his opinion of the news. It was up to you to draw your own conclusions. I'm weary of the pundits picking through the news and making an analysis, it's a waste of my time and energy.

@futurebird Yes and. Even hard news is often trivial details of a consequential story that hasn't resolved. I'm thinking of the day to day moves in a court case or the back and forth negotiations around a future policy. I never remember all that stuff once there's a verdict.

@futurebird I like reading news, but the endless cycle of "Boom! Trump got destroyed", "Look at the dumb thing Trump did", "This is what will doom Trump" that has been going on for how many years now? as well as every little irrational thing MTG or some other ghoul says, can get very repetitive and just there for the advertising clicks. At these point I just mostly browse the headers and move on

@futurebird 24-hr news stations were never a good idea. They had to add a lot of speculation shows to fill the time between actual news reports and even news reports get padded with more speculation. I used to have satellite tv and the one thing I miss was their text news station. It was only the facts of events, no opinions, no speculation.

@futurebird Trully something that happens to me too. Even worth, in three languages. On international news that means listening nearly the same information and opinion multiplied by three, only for to see if there are some nuances between german (europe), spanisch (latin america) and english (US) views with the result that I'm normally way more informed than any of the single sources wondering about the BS they are talking and becoming ever more depressed because of the news itself.@CStamp

@tubbdoose @futurebird the horrible part is that those details, like what's actually in a bill, or what happened at city council meeting that didn't feature any shouting, is exactly the sort of thing that's almost always reduced to a single paragraph, or even a single sentence. Those are the things which often dramatically alter people's lives, and have far more importance than the "main character" crap, and yet, they're ignored.
