Ok I’m being silly but this Trilobite book by Fortey is really good. My favorite part so far is the “parade of trilobites”.

@futurebird Yeah, that might be something I need to find. Trilobites are cool. The real Old Ones, as it were.

@secretsloth It’s this part of the book where he goes off just describing his favorite trilobites in order from the start of their time to the end but as if they are scuttling and swimming by.

@futurebird I'm really kicking myself right now. Around 10 years ago there was this hilarious (in the best way) display in the Cleveland museum of natural history, and one exhibit featured a video of a very stern and impassioned woman singing a song that I can only describe as a lament about trilobites. I don't think there were many lyrics other than "trilobite" being held out in long notes. It was amazing and I can't find anything even remotely resembling it online. Maybe it's still there?

@futurebird I need to find my copy of Trilobite! again - I read it absolutely ages ago and still remember so much of it. So good!In addition to writing books, Richard Fortey's done some BBC documentaries - I remember his one on rockpools being really interesting. Faintly illicit YouTube copy here, which may or may not work outside the UK:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reI-rUxl-rw

@futurebird I love Fortey. I've read Trilobite and Earth: An Intimate History. Here's Palaeocast Episode with Fortey. https://www.palaeocast.com/episode-18-trilobites/
