@DrLindseyFitzharris @TealCartoons Hah, excellent!(Would I get in trouble buying it for a soon-to-be six-year-old?)

@john @PaoloViscardi See, words of an expert there!(One of my previous guesses was ‘possibly a vertebrate’. Accurate imprecision!)Very faded house finch?

@nev Having grown up the other side of the Atlantic - I was in my thirties the first time I saw a (live) raccoon up close. Or rather - two of 'em, on a #Seattle fence, spotted one November evening when I was walking home from the bus...Simultaneously alien and familiar - it seems good to look at seemingly common wildlife with fresh eyes. (Those feet! The faces! The stripy tails!)#nature #naturePhotography #racoons

@grammargirl @Seth I'm reminded of something quite different but with the same in/on distinction - 'in orbit' versus 'on orbit' (the latter seemingly preferred by NASA when referring to activities during spaceflight).This seems a decent breakdown of things: https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2014/11/grammar-in-space-are-you-in-orbit-or-on-orbit/381522/(I did physics and astrophysics a zillion years ago at university where things were always *in* orbit, so NASA's oddly specific wording has always stuck out a bit.)

@talaith I do wonder if I'm the only person who ended up digitising their #sourdough in quite frankly ridiculous levels of detail using #photogrammetry...(Cheap scanning rig involving a lazy susan, LED lighting panels, a dSLR with macro lens on a tripod and a whole lot of computer processing. Yes, I'm weird. Have some 3D renders.)

@john Vector graphics peaked with ArtWorks on the Acorn A5000.(Used it loads at school - but somehow I immediately bounce right off Illustrator. And Inkscape, annoyingly enough…)

@Wolven Boxes of cereal, too. Blimey.(I just checked, and I've got one of the affected boxes - unfortunately it's an *empty* box I just fished out of the recycling. Blimey again. Sheer breadth of the recall is pretty scary - that they haven't been able to narrow down the problem futher...)

@futurebird Description of it as an 'outworld' has me imagine the ants' nest as a starship on a grand voyage of exploration through the cosmos - with the ants discovering a new planet and immediately going "Prime Directive? what? lol" and gleefully, carefully terraforming the place in their image before moving on.(I'm now expecting there to be actual, uninhabited exoplanets out there with extensive ant-like improvements...)

@futurebird I think my brain must work in a similar way to yours - cue sudden flashback to some very relevant answers from a bioarchaeologist (Dr Brenna Hassett) and an osteoarchaeologist (Prof Alice Roberts):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT-ecMjcRiE&t=3044s(Timestamp at about 1:06:10. Summary: anaerobic mudslide, or buried in a limestone cave!)

@futurebird I'd been utterly stressed out about, well, *everything* - and managed to pretty much disconnect from the news about a week ago, spending some time taking photos of barnacles on the Oregon coast instead (amongst other things).About ten minutes ago, I thought I'd quickly check in online again, having assumed things might have calmed down a little.Ah.

@futurebird That design is great!The 'digital stuff' reminds me of the 1997 UK £2 coin - designed by an art teacher and showing the outward progress of technology, including a printed circuit board and light reflecting down fibre optic cables. Oh, and a ring of cogs that, in reality, *would not turn*...https://www.royalmint.com/shop/limited-editions/celebrating-25-years-of-the-2-pound-coin/behind-the-iconic-design-bruce-rushin/

@futurebird I've got an electric kettle in the US - one of the first things I acquired over here, and it's working fine ~16 years later.British tea ritual? Empty kettle, run tap for a few seconds, add water to kettle. Boil, and just after the kettle clicks off, pour boiling water into mug with (Yorkshire!) teabag in. Forget for ~5 minutes. Give teabag a good stir and prod with teaspoon (or back of fork) and remove. Add milk.:cuppa: (There's all sorts of fancy tea - and then there's this.)

@futurebird I need to find my copy of Trilobite! again - I read it absolutely ages ago and still remember so much of it. So good!In addition to writing books, Richard Fortey's done some BBC documentaries - I remember his one on rockpools being really interesting. Faintly illicit YouTube copy here, which may or may not work outside the UK:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reI-rUxl-rw

@futurebird Wikipedia, the National Weather Service forecasts (in the US) or the BBC weather pages (in the UK), and BBC Food:https://www.bbc.co.uk/foodLast one is really good for basic recipes that immediately get to the point without endless waffle - or AI slop. I'll often use stuff there as a reliable starting point for doing my own thing...
