There are too many sci fi stories where a computer is fed “all of human knowledge” and becomes enlightened and wise and can answer any question. You would not be impressed with a person who had somehow read and memorized every book. We know that wisdom is synthesis not simply breadth. And not just anything that can pass as synthesis, but making connections that lead to correct predictions. Making connections that are useful to people.

@futurebird The flaw in that thinking can also be summarised as "42" 😁

@futurebird Plus, book smart leaves out the knowledge gained from experience, something computers cannot attain like humans do.

@futurebird Frequently, those stories seem to end with the computer deciding to destroy humanity, itself, or the universe. Perhaps it's the lack of critical thinking.

@veronica Feels like some of the humor and point of some the better stories was lost on people. But you know? it’s not like people are going to a super computer oracle— it’s more like overnight people have decided boggle cubes are intelligent and that it’s a great idea to shake one and ask for relationship advice and medical consultations.

@futurebird @veronica People have been doing that with tarot, I Ching, and similar things for more or less ever.

@futurebird even if a computer were to know everything that humanity knows they would still not be able to answer every question correctly. for example due to time and resource constraints many museums have a very incomplete picture of their own collections

@futurebird I don't know what Douglas Adams intended, but I've always thought of it as pointing out that computers are not people, and no matter how advanced, won't process information in the same way.

@futurebird Wisdom is to do the things you know to be good and true .. not to know something or being able to repeat/reproduce them.

@futurebird Why is it so often the wisest thing you can say or do is nothing?

@futurebird I agree with your overall point, but I would definitely be impressed by a person who had read and memorized every book!

@futurebird We're actively seeing that play out with GenAI, and on the whole it's a dismal failure that only demonstrates how easy the public are to fool if you sound convincing.
