I was idly wondering what the social media equivalent of software freedom would be. Then it hit me, with the weight of revelation;Social freedom. It encapsulates the human rights amd civil liberties that decentralised networks are structurally better at protecting. As well as the software freedom ideas that translate those rights and liberties into technical terms.Anyone keen to help start a formal coordination and lobbying body called something like Social Freedom Network?#SocialFreedom

@strypey How do you envision translating the concept of "social freedom" into actionable principles? What kind of help are you seeking to launch the Social Freedom Network? How would the proposed Social Freedom Network work practically? Would it be focused on policy advocacy, technical standards, something else? What role do you see for existing decentralized social networks (like Mastodon, Diaspora, or others) in advancing this concept of social freedom?

I half-seriously proposed;> a formal coordination and lobbying body called something like Social Freedom Network?@Zergling_man> general-forgefed:matrix.batsense.netThis is a protocol development project, to develop forge federation based around ActivityPub.> socialcoding-foundations:matrix.orgSocial Coding, like P2P Foundation, is a great conceptual skunkworks, for developing novel ideas like Social eXperience. What I have in mind is more like a cross between the FSF and the SWF.

These are great questions @jxself! I was only half-serious with the proposition, but I do think these are good questions to explore, regardless of whether a new project or organisation comes out of it.I'll give them some serious thought, and get back to you in a day or two. If I forget, prod me! I have a patchy memory and I'm easily distracted (dang ADHD), and sometimes need a prod to come back to things even when I think they're important.

@strypey Here's a recent take on decentralised social networks - they will slowly become more and more decentralised, until they're just islands - then they will be like everywhere else

@joegrimer> decentralised social networks ... will slowly become more and more decentralised, until they're just islands - then they will be like everywhere elseBlueSky already is. Nostr doesn't work like that. The Mastodon Brahman caste are probably heading that direction. But I think most of the people running fediverse servers can see that being an island didn't work for CoHost. Or even Titter, which wouldn't have been hocked off to Melon Husk if it was a successful business.
