“ENSHITTIFICATION (noun, colloquial): the gradual deterioration of a service or product brought about by a reduction in the quality of service provided, especially of an online platform, and as a consequence of profit-seeking”https://www.macquariedictionary.com.au/word-of-the-year/word-of-the-year-2024/…used by folks who don’t understand how venture capital/capitalism works to blame individual platforms instead of the system at large.e.g., Do you think this latest VC-funded platform will enshittify like the others or is it safe to use?

Either enshittification is a synonym for capitalism or it is bullshit.

If something was always shit at its core but you couldn’t tell because you were busy nibbling at its sweet crust, it doesn’t mean it enshittified when you finally got to the centre, it means it was always a shit soufflé.

@aral it's a particular process in capitalism, so yes it's capitalism, but it's a specific process that occurs in certain kinds of capitalist industries (provide useful service to create 'monopoly', use that monopoly to serve your business partners not your service users, translate your monopoly into siphoning the profit from the business partners to yourself, with each step enshittifying the previously useful service that attracted people in the first place).

@aral I don't agree, mostly because I think the problem is a mix of what people do and what people think about what people do. Reality contains some things that can be anywhere from totally fine to preposterous monstrous injustices depending on disposition. And I'm not talking about obvious things like genocide, slavery, domination, abuse, and rape. I'm talking about things like scarcity, competition, compromise, triage, and prioritization. These things all exist on a continuum, and human beings being human they have different instincts for where to draw the line. Being aware of the ontologically unbroken name of the continuum is important, but it is a valid choice to be untroubled by things up to a certain limit of inaction. This sort of thing can only be resolved by people living their lived and trying to act righteously according to their understanding of where the line is. There is no analysis or algorithm or set of first principles that ever obviates this.

@aral ... This past week I watched 'Hitler & the Nazi's / evil on trial' on Netflix and was appalled & disgusted at the parallels of speech & actions of Hitler & Netanyahu which lent credence to the term 'Zionazi'

@aral Enshitification requires capitalism as it is the profit drive that causes the enshitification.Enshitification is the end state of software in a capitalistic society.

@joachim @aral @GreenSkyOverMe no, it is all honey at first, but they design it so that they can replace the honey with shit after lusers get hooked. what we have to watch out for to avoid it is not the shit itself (that's too late), but potential for enhittifiability, i.e., whether or not we can reject undesirable changes from under us.see https://www.fsfla.org/~lxoliva/#Unshittify

@lxo @joachim @aral All examples I can think of really required proprietary software from the start, so no honey - although I guess many people won't notice the difference between honey and honey-tasting substitute.

@aral It is precipitated by choke point capitalism. The book by that name describes it in detail. I like Venn diagrams; they can show us more nuance and detail in something, helping avoid false dichotomies and oversimplified statements. Enshitification is largely contained within capitalism and brings more information to the conversation.
