Update on the French rail strike and the freight situation. So actually Fret SNCF is breaking even today, their trouble is coming from bleeding money in the years prior and the Commission was asking them to pay back France for the subsidies. That was obviously not happening and would bankrupt the company. Instead France negotiated a restructuring to split away locomotive maintenance and shed 10% of the workforce.

That's what the strike is against, except not many people stopped working. Most TGVs are running. Also I liked the graph in this article, showing a boom in German rail freight volumes, while they were cratering in France after liberalisation.https://www.lemonde.fr/les-decodeurs/article/2024/11/21/demantelement-de-fret-sncf-comprendre-les-raisons-de-la-colere-des-cheminots_6406236_4355770.html@pony @djasa

@DiegoBeghin @pony Seems to confirm my vague understanding that French protectionism was really unhelpful for their freight rail. Like, is Vectron finally approved for French network? And how long did it take, 10 years?

@djasa @pony It's also partly about French deindustrialisation while otoh German industry was getting more integrated with the new EU members.
