Drivers here in Siegen do suck. Busy narrow 2-way street, and cars driving in the opposite direction of the traffic jam drive *over the footpath* to give a wide berth to the opposing traffic. Clearly more comfortable with the risk of running us over than of scratching their rear view mirror.

Today was a brutal reckoning with the new season for me. Not that cold yet, but the forecast for the end of the week is cold indeed for Vienna and Budapest. Had to bring an actual coat with me

My night train experience:- The comfiest option is more expensive than a flight+hotel night, even though the proper comparison is a *hostel* night, since you're likely to share the room with strangers- Despite taking the comfiest option, still didn't sleep great with the thin mattress, the pressure changes in tunnel, and occasional hard breaking. Well I also had my own reflux issue tbf

Some biblical rains here in Austria-Hungary. My train ride today will already depart late, hope there won't be further disruptions.

I think the only time I've ridden a train just for the thrill of the train ride and nothing else was the DLR in London

Wasn't Thierry Breton supposed to be identifying production bottlenecks in the EU defense industry and helping solve them? Not very inpressed by his tenure.

Just walked past some idiot driver whose car was spewing a cloud of thick white-blueish smoke behind him. Not sure how many years of life expectancy he took from me but I'm sure stinky right now.

Iran supplies Russia with balistic missiles but due to escalation concerns they can only be used on targets inside Russia

Asking quotes from international moving companies and I guess the lesson is to rent furnished if you're likely to move far away in the near future.

Police boarded the ICE in Aachen and walked through the train, checked a few random people (not me). Thanks to them, we need to do an extra stop in Eschweiler to drop them off. (Might lose my connection thanks to this, we were already running late)That was remarkably pointless? I don't see how this satisfies even the kind of voter who's into border controls.

Humankind has perfected Ugliness in the form of big box stores with the parking out front. And yet mitigation is easy.

Allright, so what's all the bureaucracy I need to take care of as an EU foreigner moving to Germany?I know I'll need to do the Anmeldung, and probably find my own health insurance as I'll be working remotely. If someone has experience with this, I would appreciate it! I think a recommendation for an accountant might also be nice.@jon @Alon

It's been such an epic journey of 2h30 from Cologne, but seems like we're finally reaching Aachen.

Reading the details about the cyclist murdered by a driver this week in Paris only makes it worse. The driver first ran over the cyclist's foot and at first backed off when the victim complained. But then as the cyclist kept complaining in front of his car he just ran over him. Absolutely barbaric.https://www.lemonde.fr/societe/article/2024/10/17/cycliste-tue-a-paris-l-automobiliste-presente-a-un-juge-d-instruction-vendredi_6354612_3224.html

I was complaining about running diesel trains under wire in Siegen but I just saw it earlier today in Bonn too near the main station. RB 30 I believe.

Hard to argue the train is a good way to do your French Christmas travel when it's the rail unions' favourite season for strikes

Farming Simulator 25 should include breaks to travel to Brussels and burn a metro station near the EU Commission and dump manure in front of the European Parliament. All important activities to keep your subsidies high

Update on the French rail strike and the freight situation. So actually Fret SNCF is breaking even today, their trouble is coming from bleeding money in the years prior and the Commission was asking them to pay back France for the subsidies. That was obviously not happening and would bankrupt the company. Instead France negotiated a restructuring to split away locomotive maintenance and shed 10% of the workforce.
