There is an old theory that paying Telling people that, yes, they are doing all the the horrible things you thought they would just makes us feel helpless. When sharing news I will ask myself "is this *actionable* ?" If it isn't? I might not be worth talking about. Trump is a reality TV star and the nation is enthralled with the drama. The court cases, the cabinet picks, "how dare they!" "How awful!"

When it came to "following the news" I made some big mistakes in the past few years. I was lazy. Letting myself get sucked into the day to day noise of the political circus. I've already seen that my energy can be better spent doing just about anything else. I really wanted to believe "nobody is above the law." I mean, that's never been true, not really, and now there is ample proof all around us.

It's amazing watching new outlets that would from time to time correctly asses just how much of a threat this new government presents before the election go full "I for one welcome out insect overlords" and try to make this out to be normal. "We have to work with them."No you do not. My last bits of trust, which were already deeply compromised in the large media producers that weren't overt right wing propagandists has been totally shattered.

@futurebird amazing, but predictable. Did you see Maddow telling people to join book clubs instead of rioting in the streets? To do anything except be effective. Even she has flipped.

My enthusiasm for supporting individual journalists, and smaller news-makers has increased. And despite not being a "people person" I'm very motivated to show up to help in any way that I can with concrete actions. I hope you are doing the same and I hope that when you need help you ask for it.

I have not needed the #USpol tag much as of late. I will only post about things that are actionable. And here is an action you could take: try to do the same... before you share the horrors think about if you are participating in starting up the drama machine again. Can you reframe it so there is something people can DO?

@futurebird Someone yesterday used the word "kayfabe" to describe the carnival performance Trump creates, and my brain immediately landed on "trumpery" (from old French) to describe the same.In a nation the elects film stars and reality TV personalities into high office, the spectacle is all that matters.

@maggiejk There are some things we can and should do— but guidance isn’t coming from the same kind of media that played into people’s desire for good news and failed to prepare many of us for this outcome. Some of that is take responsibility for myself. I could see the polls I knew this was possible but I didn’t want to engage with the hard work they imply must be done. Talking about Trump was easier.

@FinalOverdrive You are correct that philosophy is alive in conservative circles —but a conservative welfare state implies investment in the public, in (white, christian, gender conforming) working class people. They do not care about those people. No, they are going to deregulate, and plunder, take as much wealth as they can— there is no vision they don’t care, not even about some pernicious white nationalist vision of America.

@Crow I did not “see Maddow” and, unless someone recommended a particular piece of hers (she has done some good history podcasts) I don’t think I will see her or any of the others any time soon. I want to say it’s just about being intentional in media consumption but in truth I feel badly burned, manipulated, distracted.

@Crow I understand why they didn’t spend more time investigating the possibility of a Trump win: that wouldn’t have been as popular. And this flaw in such media makes it kind of useless and a waste of time.

@Crow @futurebird I don't watch her (I don't watch non-comedy versions of news, I read it), but I've seen similar advice shared elsewhere. I think the idea with book clubs is to build a network of local people who can help plan how to resist fascism and also to avoid feeling like the only one who wants to resist it.

@stellarsarah @Crow I think the book clubs are a fine idea. I also think that if you have been chilled on the idea of protest because of the thread? WELL that *is* something worth examining. The right to protest is maintained by exercising it.Are they going to crack the heads of middle aged white women with “my body my choice” signs and a parade permit? If you assume YES that’s a victory without effort for them.

@futurebird @stellarsarah @Crow I have followed this thread for a bit, and just want to pitch in that my impression is that US peeps need to change a bit of their perspective on public protests. It is way too much of ambling around in the night acting target for the police and not inconvenience business and the general public. Look at the French and for heavens sake organise! Unions built the Scandinavian freedom from the capitalist strangle hold, you need something like that.

@futurebird In this (journalists bending the knee) the US is a couple years behind Italy. Some journalist still complain about some things (like the Prime Minister refusing to allow questions during her press conferenecs), but then also refuse to question her on it and push back when given the chance, and refuse to say stuff like "{insert person related to the government} said something entirely wrong here's the truth they are refusing to admit"

@futurebird @stellarsarah @Crow regarding cracked heads, I watched my mother change from refusing to join protests because "young agitators make them dangerous", to refusing to join them because "cops make them dangerous", which is a step in some direction, at least.

@futurebird @Crow I agree, but also right now, they haven't *done* anything and aren't in power yet. So protesting against Trump in the streets is premature. I think that's why a lot of the advice people are giving right now is to prepare, including by building networks.

@futurebird@FinalOverdriveAnd many of the people they plunder will be happy about it because they'll believe "deciding for themselves how to spend their money" will have grown the economy. Whether the economy is better or worse.I think a big difference between Europe and the US is even when we court fascism it's still in more of an everyone for themselves kind of way in the US.

@GoblinQuester @futurebird @stellarsarah @Crow For what it's worth, labor strikes in the US have been getting both more disruptive and more effective in the past 10 years or so. I do expect the counterreaction to get more violent but that comes with the territory.

@futurebird @stellarsarah @Crow My hesitation to protest right now is very much in a kind of Alinsky-style tactical hesitation. I think they're goading protests of the kind we've usually done right now.And if we protest, what are the demands? What are we disrupting? I did the big Washington marches against the Iraq War and watched it echo in a void.We need protests but of a different sort and I don't know what it is.

@MichaelTBacon @stellarsarah @Crow That makes sense. I hate protesting. It’s exhausting and annoying at best dangerous at worst. I just want people to think about *why* they are pulling the breaks. I’m not raring to go.

@futurebird @stellarsarah @Crow Yeah. I think for me, in theory, it's going to be a lot less about protest per se and a bit more about civil disobedience. Things that don't get organized on social media beyond a theoretical level.

@futurebird No one is above what law? Natural law? Or the stepped down version of natural law represented by the state?Nobody gets off this planet alive. We're all rushing ahead to our own mortality. Truly, *no one* is above *that* law. However, anyone with enough time, money and influence can play the system to their benefit because that model is *intended* to err on the side of innocence. And I, for one, would not have it any other way.
