@futurebird Modem came up in crosswords last week. The definition was something like "you use it to connect a phone to a computer". Took us a while to get to the word the puzzle wanted.

@futurebird @whknott alternatively (or additionally): enforce weird rules, like mandatory rhyming scheme and verse length. Debate is broadcast on a delay, so only when the rules are respected what they say can actually be heard. Have foreign observers who don't speak the language evaluate that, so they won't be swayed by what's actually being said. On each "mistake", the podium is lowered a bit so the speaker looks shorter.

@futurebird I don't know the answer to your question, and I'd be curious as well now, but I have a follow up question ready: what is the name for the videos in which a guy (every one that the algo tried to push at me had a guy, usually bald) watches one of those videos, commenting and explaining how something is being done poorly and/or wrong?

@futurebird I think there's a sense of catharsis in watching people mess things up completely. Having dealt with a roman catholic upbringing, I know how attractive the feeling of "my neighbor is worse off than me" is: that kind of content brings it to scale.

@apophis @futurebird well, yes, for sure. But I don't really get how having many people explain how the obviously bad idea is bad adds anything. It's a special kind of very useless reaction video that adds noise to a non existing conversation. It's not unlike men at bars on Sunday morning shouting who should play in the Serie A soccer games.

@futurebird I'll be honest: out of context, that quote may be great lyrics for a 90s' punk song. Late 90s, early 2000s.

@futurebird The last groups I remember doing it in Italy (where it's been illegal since forever) where one of the far right "patriot" parties we have in government now. At the time, a core of their platform was that Italy should be divided in separate states, so that richer regions could get rid of poorer ones. They were all forgiven in exchange for political support for Berlusconi, at the time.

@futurebird The ocean is scarier for me. We know there's nothing in space, while we know there stuff in the ocean. And things to me are by default scarier than nothing. And we can "see" farther in space.

@futurebird An image came into my mind of a burglar (dressed as a comic book burglar, mask and all) hoping to steal some valuable vintage wine and being utterly surprised.

@futurebird wth. This sounds like Italian politics in the early nineties (pre-berlusconi), only with the added context of 30+ years, making it worse (and a much worse scale and media-influence). I'm sorry the people of the US has to go through this again.

@futurebird @Outpatientzero It felt like playing a sport, but the referee can and will change the rules, and sometimes score for the other team himself.

@futurebird In this (journalists bending the knee) the US is a couple years behind Italy. Some journalist still complain about some things (like the Prime Minister refusing to allow questions during her press conferenecs), but then also refuse to question her on it and push back when given the chance, and refuse to say stuff like "{insert person related to the government} said something entirely wrong here's the truth they are refusing to admit"

@futurebird @stellarsarah @Crow regarding cracked heads, I watched my mother change from refusing to join protests because "young agitators make them dangerous", to refusing to join them because "cops make them dangerous", which is a step in some direction, at least.

@futurebird I honestly don't see them as a possibility in our lifetimes. I wish they were. And not entirely insulated from Earth and a dedicated infrastructure. The thing that will take longer, I think, is sorting out the socio-economic side, as well as the environmental impact (on Earth) of moving the required amount of stuff to (at least) orbit.

@futurebird I remember a time when this was actually sold as a feature. When Pokemon Go first came out, some providers made plans for it that would prioritize its traffic, as well as "count" it separately for accounting/payments.

@futurebird @whknott @Nazani however, if the reality tv my father watches taught me anything, from the huddle many voices will rise saying something along the lines of "no homo"
