People like to complain about all the ways #Mastodon has failed or failed to capitalize, and it just feels like the same old story flung at #Linux, and all the other maker-funded alternatives out there.Mastodon is built to the priorities of one dude. Is this a shock? Where's the money and the staff magically coming from? "Mastodon isn't competing with Bluesky!" No kidding."Mastodon is too complicated!" Now you understand email provider consolidation.1/xhttps://hachyderm.io/@danilo/113382452904993645

MONEY gets you features & faster iteration & more people's needs being considered, & more tooling and moderation.Where does money come from? Advertising, an engagement algorithm (that we all hate don't we?), or venture capitalism that breeds centralization.I'm sorry but if you want ad-free tech that doesn't feast on your private data & habits, that isn't under the control of one big corporation, then what you get is poorly funded hobby projects that prioritize the creator's wishlist.2/x

@syntaxseed I think you can get better but we're gonna need a protocol for fiat (not crypto) transfer. bank to bank. automatic. easy to manage. until we have this, most won't be giving monthly. but once we do have such a system, I think a lot of people would, not just to FOSS projects and instances but journalism and all kinds of things. a real alternative to paywalls and ads.

And if we all want it to not be so - then we are talking about a reality that isn't nurtured under capitalism. We are right to want that & work for it.... but pretending that Bluesky doesn't have a gigantic advantage despite being the same old same old, run by the same greed mongers... isn't being realistic.3/x

Yes Mastodon sucks in a lot of ways. So does Linux! And most of the FOSS software I use to be quite honest. 😆But I know why they suck and it's NOT because they just don't care enough about not sucking. 4/4

People make the same complaints about independent journalism: too biased! Not enough coverage! Website is janky! It doesn't have <insert feature here>.Grassroots, independent & decentralized things have all these problems. That's why we should use them, fund them, and help them grow. If we don't- then we know how that story goes.

@wjmaggos I politely disagree with you there. I don't know any creators actively seeking funding who don't have a list of ways you can pay them. Yeah it's usually a middleman service - but no one is saying "I'm not sponsoring Mastodon because Github/Paypal/Patreon is taking a cut."And if donating via those services is "too much work" because it's not bank-to-bank... then they didn't really want to donate after all.
