The elites will be fine. The people MAGA hates will be just fine. They may cry out and bluster. Maybe that's fun to watch. But they will be just fine in the end. I don't think they really see or know the people who will hurt most. It's not the sort of people who get talked about very much who will be hurt most. People that hardly anyone centers, regardless of politics. There is some irony some are among MAGA themselves, but I don't find that amusing at all.

I also think it's important to remember that, although spite and hate were powerful forces in this election the most powerful forces were the apathy, confusing, alienation, anger and helplessness that lead a near plurality to not vote at all. To look at the political circus and decide it wasn't relevant, or worth their time, or to be so harried and exhausted by surviving they had no time to look at all.

@futurebird or to find out they couldn't vote. the right to a mail-in vote was a big part of what gave democracy a chance in 2020. Voter repression laws made sure it was greatly reduced in the states that mattered most.

@futurebird I very much agree and it's awful watching the privileged blame the vulnerable. Every time I see someone do that I suspect they'd sell someone else out to preserve their privilege in a heartbeat. Not save their life, preserve their privilege. They're also very likely one of the "Good Germans" who will turn in their neighbor for hiding someone in their attic.

@futurebird I'm a little confused what you mean about "the people MAGA hates will be just fine." Maybe I'm missing the context or something, but if you mean immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, people of color, etc, since Trump and MAGA started, all have been hurt. Suicide rates have gone up. Countless immigrants were rounded up in concentration camps. And violence towards non-white races (and really violence all around) has gone up.Sorry for misunderstanding.

@nazokiyoubinbou I thinking of the prominent pundits and avatars for those groups. The so called "elite" which for some reason fails to include their own billionaire leaders.

@nazokiyoubinbou I think there are many people who don't like to think of themselves as bigots. This isn't the same thing as not supporting or benefiting from bigotry and oppression, but it is distinct from openly embracing bigotry (and there is some of that too) These are the ones who will point to a "black friend" or "gay friend" or say "but how can they be racist there is Candice Owens?"Who they are open about hating and wanting to hurt are prominent liberals.

@futurebird Yeah, my parents are among those closet racists and bigots. Though they've been coming out of that particular closet a lot more lately. (I'm especially seeing a lot of them making fun of self-identity. But I'll never ever forget my mother swearing up and down that Obama becoming president was a sign that the world would end soon.)They still don't know they are hateful bigots. Unfortunately, for important reasons (can't get into here) I can't tell them.

@nazokiyoubinbou And behind all of this is some notion that there are all of these "others" living lives of luxury, taking advantage of them and "the system"... all while turning their nose up at them. It's this cartoon version of a "liberal elite" that they imagine will be hurt and they have no remorse about it happening. But to the extent that such people exist they are well insulated from the shocks, and incompetence that will tear through the country.

@nazokiyoubinbou It's not the children of "wealthy east coast elites" who won't be vaccinated or who will die in back room abortions. It's not the wealthy elites who will die when the national weather service fails to communicate hurricane dangers properly. Nor will the cuts to SNAP harm them or the decaying schools. It's ordinary people. And I think that some people have signed up for this just because it makes a segment of the people who they perceive as elites angry.

@futurebird @nazokiyoubinbou I know a negative sample may not help, but my Dad always taught me that all people are equally shit. Color / race is just a distraction that the powers that be use to blind you to reality of their corruption. And I grew up on the bottom edge of middle class as a white boy in Atlanta. I'm also a Native American.

@stripey @nazokiyoubinbou I saw a clip of a conservative comedian doing a "set" mocking masking. He was not a very creative or groundbreaking comedic mind. He just did a mocking voice "Wear Your Mask *squaaaak*" and he squawked like a goose. It was a very school-marm annoying mom mocking voice. The crowd loved it.I saw this because someone was criticizing it. But on a visceral level *I* got it. It's so annoying when someone knows better and tell you what to do.

@stripey @nazokiyoubinbou And it feels SO GOOD when the know it all who keeps telling you what to do is wrong. Or maybe not wrong, but shown to be strutting and being too important and bossy. And there were things public health got wrong. Or didn't communicate well. It didn't help that people with big microphones in positions of power couldn't present a united front in their messaging. And that's just one example. Public trust is in the toilet for many things.

@futurebird @stripey @nazokiyoubinbou Yes!Even aside from people who are acting out of small minded schadenfreude for their political enemies, I think there are a bunch who are just fed up with being told what to do in any way.Although I don't know that this helps solve the problem going forward, kind of thoughts things that led to this:1/x

@futurebird @stripey @nazokiyoubinbou As with a lot of things, I think some of what we're seeing is the confluence of certain historic outlooks and attitudes that seemed to folks at the time reasonable and fair, but have been extensively reexamined or criticized.2/x

@futurebird @stripey @nazokiyoubinbou Like: some jokes that used to be seen as inappropriate but not morally reprehensible, wow will now get people shunned. Advice about health has changed, and there are more rules and obligations. There are more rules about how to treat people, and language to use, and use of cultural elements.Rules about how to dispose of materials, land use, and all kinds of things.3/x

@PTR_K @stripey @nazokiyoubinbouTo be fair, anyone in any kind of minority group, has always had a whole host of "rules" to worry about that aren't explained or written down with huge consequences. So, some of this is more like making the burden of making social cooperation possible be spread more evenly.Though, I think there is also a more general dimension to this.

@futurebird @stripey @nazokiyoubinbou These are generally rules with good intentions (and most often good rationale as well). But I can imagine a lot of folks chafing at all the things they have to keep track of now. Especially if they weren't used to it for the first 20-40 years of their lives. Or they tried to do what people called for only to be criticized for not doing it right or going far enough.4/x

@futurebird @stripey @nazokiyoubinbou Especially if they don't see their own lives directly improving from the changes, or if they aren't aware of anyone personally who was complaining about the way things were before. If you don't directly see the benefit, all the changes seem like busybody stuff, being uptight, and scolding over nothing.5/x

@futurebird @stripey @nazokiyoubinbou Before maybe 15 years ago, my sense is that folks still felt (or maybe were taught) that civic institutions and social obligations were worth the effort at least to some extent. That freedom and responsibility hung in a balance, which could be shifted a bit but both were necessary. Even religion (in my experience) seemed to be more publicly about loving your neighbor and even enemy.6/x

@futurebird @stripey @nazokiyoubinbou But my sense now is that, partly due to conservative propaganda, partly due to feeling stifled by additional requirements, partly due to criticism for things they previously thought were okay...that more folks now feel things are out of control or overly restrictive for no reason. And they're lashing out any way they can.7/x

@futurebird @stripey @nazokiyoubinbou Even if the Libertarian party hasn't caught on widely, there's still the idea that we need a lot fewer laws and that you don't owe other people anything.Antivaxx increase during Covid seemed to be a response to feeling things were out of control and trying to take back personal power and assert personal and communal wisdom in the face of distant, restrictive authority figures with difficult-to-understand pronouncements.8/x

@futurebird This is an excellent clear explanation of how we arrived here and it comes right from the authoritarian playbook. Keep people too busy to actually live and they will skip voting at all or striving for their rights. I keep getting shocked every time I encounter someone who didn’t vote or left the presidential vote blank. And it keeps happening.

@futurebird @nazokiyoubinbou schools get 90% funding locally, there are a ton of resources for weather forcast that have nothing to do with government. The chicken little crap as well as calling trump supporters nazis is a big reason why harris lost so badly. If the democrats dont calm down in 4 years it will be president vance. Need to go back to the JFK democratic party, problem is he would be a libertarian or a Republican if he were alive today.
