Do you have to be scum of the Earth to be a world leader these days or is it just a nice to have?

@aral I mean, I don't think there was the time in which majority of rulers weren't scum.

@rad Yeah, maybe I was being overly generous with the “these days” bit.

@aral It is a good day to ask that question.Let's see if we can find any world leaders we respect. How about Claudia Sheinbaum, president of Mexico? She's a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, favors recognition of a Palestinian state, is pro-LGBT, done good work on the IPCC, has a PhD in energy engineering with a lot of scholarly publications. Doesn't appear to have any visible corruption or scandals. By most accounts, she's also not a jerk.Whaddayathink?

@aral @AnarchoNinaWrites These days? Wanting power over millions or billions of people is always deranged.

@aralhttps://brianpklaas.com/corruptibleHaven't read this book, so I don't know yet what to think of it, but just based on the information about it, I suspect that:1: No you don't /always/ have to2: But often it definitely helps3: In some cases, the causality works the other way round4: It may not have to be that way but removing the scum from leadership and keeping it out may be something of a longer-term challenge. It's definitely on my list of books to read. Which is an unsettlingly long list :(
