What is "real studying" when it comes to mathematics?

@unchartedworlds Students tend to gauge how much they "studied" by how many pages they filled with writing. It's hard to convey that simply taking out a problem and reading it carefully, realizing you don't understand several aspects of it and have no idea where to begin, and writing NOTHING is much more important to the process. Now you know what you don't know. So when you look back at your notes, or go to class you'll know what you need to pay attention to.

@unchartedworlds Also, this helps students move from "I don't know AAAANYTHING." to "I don't get what you mean by 'write the equation?'" Which is a question I can answer. A anchor for future progress.

@futurebird I once had a math teacher who gave us a practice quiz where we were graded by how many questions we attempted, not the correctness. It seemed silly at the time but I’ve since understood it as a pedagogical pre-test, and it makes even more sense in the light of your advice.

@unchartedworlds yep, that's the crux of many Law students when they get to the 3rd of 4 years around here, thwy think "I've been studying this for 2 years and I don't know anything to solve this problem, how can that be possible?!?". Then they start copying textbooks, cramming, then watch others solve the problem, etc., never asking themselves "can I try to do it, find out exactly what I don't know so I [unfortunately almost by themselves, because some college professors don't help students, at all] can start learning what I don't yet know?".@futurebird

@futurebird Yeah, doing it initially feels so impossible, slow and painful. That's not an indication it's a bad method, just that you have work to do.
