I wonder how hard it would be to have a wireless mouse with two receivers paired to it. Like, only one is active at a time, but it can be used with either computer

@foone Crappy as Logitech has been lately a lot of theirs do this easily. They have a button to swap between 1/2 and I have mine using receiver/bluetooth and I think it can be two different receivers. My MX Ergos switch like that and my M585s. Not sure which others.

@foone The Logitech MX Ergo almost has this. You press a button on the mouse to switch between the two computers. I used it a lot back when I had it

like I know there are mice out there that can pair to multiple devices, with like a switch to select between them.I mean more a mouse that is automatically connected to whichever of the two receivers is on

I'm wondering because I have two laptops I switch between. They're never on at the same time (I only have one lap) but I keep having to disconnect and reconnect my wired mouse

worse idea: one mouse with two USB cables, and some smarts to make it pick whichever one is powered on

@foone Some Bluetooth audio devices remember the last few paired devices, and when powered on will cycle through them until they connect to something; I don't know if it *has* been done for mice, but I'm sure it could. Totally cursed if more than one host is on, but not actually a bad idea if you pay attention.

@foone Let's keep making this idea worse(better) - the mouse runs a Synergy server internally, and switches USB inputs when you move the cursor to the edge of the appropriate screen.

@foone Or a USB cable multiplexer/arbitrator middlebox that takes n cables in × m cables out and electrically connects the two that would form a circuit.

@foone this, but the driver has a special function to tell the mouse when it's at the edge of the screen to switch over to the other one, synergy-style

@foone I haven't seen a dual-host mouse, but there are dual-host USB hubs. You could plug a mouse into such a hub.

@foone closest I can think of is the Logi M575 I have. It works with Bluetooth and the Logi unifying receiver, and you can switch between themIt involves using Bluetooth, though, which might be a dealbreaker :o(

@emily @foone Even better (i.e. worse): maybe you could jurry rig something like this with a PS/2 or serial mouse and two adapters. Keyboards need bi-directional communication for leds, but mice don't. Not sure about PS/2, but I think serial mice just need tx and ground.

@ids1024 @foone yeah I don't think you could do it by just splitting the usb cable, enumeration requires bidirectional communication even if the HID reports are unidirectionalbut you could probably do it with sufficient determina--no, I will not start another dumb project, bad emily

@foone maybe @troed can build one for you. Forgot the name. Basicaly a hardware based automatic KVM. Originally a device which seamlessly switches computers when the mouse gets to the border, thus extending to 2 screens but on 2 different computers. As it's raspberry based it can be reprogrammed to do whatever you want.

@foone the easy option would be: like two pmos FETs, an ldo, usb analog Switch 1:2. More complicated microcontroller with 3 usb connecto, one host two devices that copies descriptors and hid events. I think the was a kvm chip set with that feature

@foone pretty sure you can do this with Logitech receivers. At one stage I had my spare mouse paired to its original and the one that came with my new mouse.
