The fact that bluejays are corvids explains so much about the bird drama I saw at our bird feeder as a child. The bluejays were so mean, and so busy, and they were the only birds who'd take on the crows. Everyone was aghast at their antics. But they are little blue crows and that explains EVERYTHING.

There is something diabolical and perceptive about the corvid mind. Songbirds are just confused by their drama and complexity. I imagine the poor bluejays feel underestimated by their peers, since their colorful feathers and size make them seem like songbirds.

@schratze I thought a song bird had a stereotypical "call" while corvids can make any noise they want and will mimic, and learn.

@futurebird I hate mean birds. Earlier this year we saw a pair of beautiful yellow birds we'd never seen before at our feeders, and they nested nearby. Then a crow stole their eggs and we haven't seen the yellow birds since.

@futurebird My favorite corvid is the Canada Jay https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Canada_Jay/overview. It's easy to feed them by hand in the winter, like in long and boring lift lines. I always make sure my kids have pockets full of gorp to share on ski days.

@schratze @futurebird Today I learned! I sometimes hear the jays in my yard making very quiet soft noises. It not often but it happens. From Wikipedia:Many members of the crow family (Corvidae) communicate with croaks or screeches, which sound harsh to humans. Even these, however, have a song of sorts, a softer twitter that is given between courting partners.

@futurebird Crows and jays at today's feeding. The crows don't like when I take their picture. When they see the phone, they sit nearby until i put it down. The jays are like, "More for us!" Actually, after initial squabbling, they've come to tolerate each other pretty well at peanut time.

@futurebird @schratze "Crows are members of the avian order Passeriformes, which comprises the songbirds or perching birds, such as robins, cardinals, and sparrows. American crows differ in more ways from these familiar songbirds than by their lack of a song. One of the most marked differences is in their family life."https://www.birds.cornell.edu/crows/bbbworld.htm

@futurebird Used to have a bluejay that would start screeching like a maniac at the first photon on dawn right outside my open window. Every, Single. Morning. It drove me nuts, and then one day I shot it with a slingshot. I felt kinda bad about it, but I got over it after a good night's rest.

@futurebird I am excited to know this. I identify with a white crow as a point of reference to my personality and nature to those who closely know me, and I somehow remain chaotic goodish. (Especially when they like to hear short stories and have shiny things to trade...) Anyways. This dimension of bluejays is just a very glimmery thing to hear and I may need to make time for a rabbit hole on the subject.Thank you.

@futurebird I saw one up to no good on my back porch as a kid. Knew it was thinking evil thoughts. As soon as it poked its head in the bird house and pulled a baby sparrow out, I opened the door and spooked it. Figured the little one was a goner, but I found it had somehow landed undamaged in the grass, brought it back to the house, and it hopped right back in its hole. Always be suspicious of blue jays...

@futurebird I love corvids so much, and the blue jays especially are always just all personality all the time. The blue jays we get where I am are pinyon jays. I watched one this morning while it was trying multiple approaches to cracking something open (I couldn't tell what) by banging it against all the different surfaces it could find.Their sounds are always the loudest and most raucous, but I love hearing them and when I do, I always try and look to see what they are up to, because it's always interesting.

@futurebird One day I'd like to see Grey Jays, now again to be known as Canada Jays. They look adorable, but I have no idea what their personalities are like. Tiny beaks for a corvid, though. They are probably hanging out too far north for either of us to see them. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/news/gray-jays-get-their-old-name-back-hello-canada-jay/

@dan613 @futurebird in high elevation areas of the western USA, they can be seen scavenging snacks from campgrounds. In Alberta and BC they can be found at much more moderate elevations. They're more cautious than other corvids, perhaps because they're so small, but they're very interesting and clever.

@greensofshade They just end up using all their formic acid on some bird who won't even go away. And Ants are very humane shepherds to their little flocks. Or at least that what I assume. Though... IDK maybe I've seen them munching on an aphid instead of just milking it... but I assume there was a good reason for that.
