Since I got a lot of suggestions on my windows/linux post what else you could and should have mentioned for a distro. Here is my question directly. What Linux distro and interface do you use? What should newcomers use? (I know for some this is religion - I fully understand)#linux #oss #foss #distro

@reverend Shrug. Debian is my OS and KDE is my jam. I'm mostly devvin' a video game these days, but I have a long history of professional coding mostly behind me.

@reverend I mostly started with Ubuntu because it was easier to install at the time, and had all the drivers I needed out of the box. I since switched to Debian which is basically the core of Ubuntu.I've used the Gnome desktop (default in Ubuntu and Debian) but last year I switched to KDE. It's more like windows. So I'd start with a Kubuntu for a newbie.

@lemgandi @madcollector I also recently switched to KDE after many years of XFCE and I really like it.

@reverend If the person do simples stuff and don't know much how computers works (just knows how Windows works), i would say Mint or Zorin Os. If the person is a "gamer", i would say Pop OS (especialy If he/se have NVidia). If the person, knows how computers works, wants to really wants learn Linux, but wants to be safe, i would say Fedora.

@raphagm MINT has certainly proven itself for the proverbial “granny”. I think it's great too.

@reverend @madcollector Heh! I used XFCE for about five years at one of my best gigs. I knew I had Found My People when they offered me my choice of window managers,. I chose XFCE 'cause (a) it's not distracting and (b) I was running on a tiny workstation attached to a big phatt server, so wanted something small, simple & quick.

@lemgandi @reverend Right I also used XFCE for years on a old laptop. But I've read they're late to the Wayland party, so I prefered KDE when I abandonned the Gnome ship.

@reverendProbably Mint for people that just want to get on with whatever they want a computer to do. In the past 20 years I've used all sorts and used to change just for fun or because some feature didn't suit. But now I use Mint on a desktop and Manjaro on my Pinebook Pro. I put KDE Neon on my wife's PC as it's a rolling release, no distro upgrade to do.

@reverend linuxmint for newcomers.. mxlinux might be a good alternative too. Kde/mate/cinnamon as fully working DEs.

@reverend I settled in with Mint Cinnamon after trying several others (including Plasma). It just felt more comfortable for me. What should a newcomer use? It depends. If the newcomer is computer-adept, they should shop around (it's like dating) by watching some YouTube videos, installing several alternatives, and then settle in with what *you* like best. If you want to be told what to use, go with Mint Cinnamon (because I said so). 😀

@rspfau Some people like to be told what to do when they're dating. So there's something for everyone :))

@reverend Mint for me. Very simple to use and resembles Windows a bit, so the transition was very easy.

@reverend I've been a Linux user for 30+ years (Unix before that). I run Debian Stable but wouldn't recommend it to a new user. Hell, I even ran Slackware for 10 years. For a new user, probably Ubuntu or one of its flavors.

@reverend For 25 years now i've used more distros than I can recall, some for awhile, some just testing out. I love #KDEPlasma, been a fan of #KDE since they began long ago now. For a distro, I prefer #Fedora due to stability. For a new user #Ubuntu would be a good choice, #LinuxMint would be a fine option based on it as well. I prefer #FedoraKDE but you could have the same with #Kubuntu or even #KDENeon which are both based on Ubuntu. KDE Neon offers the latest by KDE but is less stable.
