"Trilobite: eyewitness to evolution" like "Annals of the Former World" but less daunting and metaphysical. "Annals of the Former World" is a book you get lost in, the deep past swallows you. The best way to read it is on a long train ride going out West. "Trilobite" is a book you can read in bursts on the bus, or in the tub... it's about science but feels like a magical adventure where secret worlds lurk behind bookshelves.Like one and you will like the other for different reasons.

@gannet Trilobite is by Fortey... but I had to get up and check if I was reading some less ponderous book by McPhee... they are cousins in style.

@futurebird Well, I will have to find Trilobite, then! I could use another author like McPhee.

@futurebird I read Basin and Range and Suspect Terrain when I lived in Utah, but I didn't know it became a 5 book thing

@futurebird Mastodon is dangerous: every week I seem to add a month’s worth of reading to my to-be-read list.
