@lowqualityfacts @astroPug Reading the replies to this, you begin to realize how conspiracy theories start… and wonder how many people really believe them, and how gullible they have to be…

@futurebird What can I say? The first dozen programs I ever wrote were Fortran, and they all worked! [back in 1963, in high school, in a Saturday enrichment class at Columbia, running on a NASA 7090] Of course they were trivial…

@futurebird Back in the ‘50s, we had a milkman who delivered: we had a little insulated cooler on the front porch, and a few times a week we would get a few quart bottles in the morning.

@futurebird Mastodon is dangerous: every week I seem to add a month’s worth of reading to my to-be-read list.

@futurebird Just reading “City of Last Cances” by Adrian Tchaikovsky which has a great map, lists of factions of the City and the Occupation, and Dramatis Personae, all quite useful.

@futurebird @ellestad My mother was, for a number of years, secretary for a school system’s superintendent of special education (a guy with an EdD). She said that she wrote all his letters, as he was pretty much unable to draft a coherent sentence, much less a paragraph . (During the Depression she was a schoolteacher in a one-room school.)

@futurebird A couple decades ago, I chose my main system password (it was of all things, my AOL password at one time), and soon developed muscle memory for it: fingers typed away without any conscious attention. Sometime in the last few years, I seem to have lost the muscle memory, and I now have to type it out letter by letter. Strange…

@futurebird Re: complexity and skill, I’m still amazed by my mother’s creation of two suits for herself and my kid brother’s wife. She bought a raw fleece (well not completely raw, it had been washed to remove the crud and most of the lanolin). She then carded it (aligning the fibers), and spun it on her ancient spinning wheel. Then she dyed it, using natural dyes that she made from scratch. Then she wove a lot of fabric, cut it, sewed it, added lining and buttons, and celebrated.

@futurebird @epicdemiologist I still resent the fact that my father taught me to play chess almost 75 years ago, and then, when I beat him once, never played with me again. This was about the time when Bobby Fisher was making headlines as a quite un-nice prodigy, and my parents were afraid of a similar fate for me.

@futurebird I was really freaked out years ago talking to my kid brother after quite a few years and realizing he sounded exactly like me (or at least what I sounded like on audiobook recordings I’d done volunteering for the blind).
