You know the scene in American Psycho where he makes his victim listen to various popular music hits while reciting the hollow-sounding reasons why he likes them for his captive audience? For some reason, it has been on my mind.A least he didn’t play “Ava Maria” … what is it with old men and Pavarotti? My dad used to play “the best of Pavarotti” on repeat until I thought I’d die when I had to work all summer hanging drywall and replacing water heaters. Is it because of “The Godfather”??

When I was in the hospital I’d ask my friends and family to listen to a song with me because being in pain talking was too much but with a song you have a shared thread and connection. And we can listen to the song I like. I’m sick. However I would have felt bad about making them sit through a nine song long playlist. That’s just self indulgent— unless everyone gets the chance to pick a song.

@futurebird It's been on my mind as well. 🙄 My father in law listens to Il Divo, which is fine for him, but I just can't listen to tenors. Nails on the chalkboard!

@futurebird I can't hear Ave Maria without thinking of Max von Sydow as Leland Gaunt in Needful Things (1993).

@futurebird it's a drywall thing. They have a chip because they know nobody gives them the respect that cement workers get.Nobody gets sealed up in drywall to send a message around the criminal underworld. They'd just lick their way out and get revenge. Swimming with the fishes wearing wet mud shoes? Not very effective. Therefore Pavarotti. And it helps prevent spalling if the humidity is too low.

@futurebird Nessun dorma by Pavarotti was used as the theme to the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, which is why he was heard everywhere for a while after.

@futurebird I think it’s the bombastic melancholy. Raging against the dying of the light and all that.

@futurebird …you know, makes me think now of the way techbros talk about AI now, piling smooth meaningless drivel on us about how great it is and how we need to use it. And then they metaphorically axe murder us with said AI. Very fitting.
