There is "concern" that rather than voting for Democrats at 95% Black men might slip to 90%What WON'T help: Obama doing Bill Cosby "pull up your pants" lectures. Show Black voters they are valued. Black men get lectured & blamed for everything. Perhaps Obama will reach some annoyed white voters with that talk? Could that be the play? (I am perhaps projecting 3D chess where there is none)What would this country be like without Black men? We'd be nowhere.

What is a better message? Talk about the racial wealth gap. Black people, Black families have been stymied from building wealth for decades. Black men can feel an acute sense of responsibility and guilt. But, it was nearly impossible to buy a suburban home as a Black person in the 60s and 70s the roots of this problem are deep.Harris is addressing this directly with her small business tax credits, child tax credits, help for first time home buyers.

In that message recognizing the problem (Black families have basically no wealth) and the origins of the problem (the legacies of racism and on going racism) is almost more important than the solutions. Really, that some Black men have gone and done it anyways ought to get more rounds of applause. That is how you win back that 5%Not "why are you shuffling negros so sexist and lazy."Please send my political consulting fee to my Bronx address. Thank you.

@WearsHats "And so folks who feel like the former president was lecturing them or talking down to them or singling them out, I understand where that's coming from, but that's not what he's doing."Obama's job is communicating and he consistently makes people feel this way over and over and over. I'm sick of it.

Obama seems to really enjoy being an old-head and a sourpuss, scold. (Some people kind of like that and think it's cute. I'm not one of them.) Black men are awesome and this obnoxious game of "oooh but Black women get it right what's wrong with the meeeeeen?" thing Democrats do needs to stop. Black men live in this culture where a man's self worth is tied to his ability to PROVIDE. The obstacles are huge. And yet most do it anyway. Say: Thank You.

@msbellows Harris is doing only a little better than Biden with Black men. They wonder: why isn't she doing as well with the group as Obama? The assumption is its sexism. I don't think that's the major factor personally since I don't think Obama would do as well as Obama right now. But we are talking about a Super Majority of this group of voters either way. So what matters more is TURNOUT.

@futurebird Germany has racism issues too, but the term "race", as applied to humans, has been an anathema since WW2. Even the British were surprised about racism among US soldiers back then, and that's almost a century ago...

@futurebird Here at home we are re-watching binge-watching The West Wing. Speeches like these were prepared with big teams in that tv series, and I can't imagine Obama made his speech all on his own, without several people combing through it, proposing adjustments.Maybe you could contact the Harris campaign team and propose some texts for a next speech (if ever) by Obama, and a next speech by Harris.

@WGAvanDijk I think they have heard this. Suspect Obama is such a superstar in Democratic circles they let him do what he wants. As a Black politician Obama had to show that he was willing to be critical of Black people to reassure some white voters. If he'd been too positive and supportive it might have made people worried they'd be left out. He's still doing this like he always has. It's not going to change much, like it's not going to hurt Harris. It's just not helping.

@futurebird Yeah, you're probably right. But I learned the hard way: if I won't send a message, won't offer help, won't be specific in what I mean and why I would propose a text, ... well, it would go wrong.Because of me, small bits of texts have changed in Dutch regulations and laws (local and national), and even some EU stuff. The last time I did is 10 years ago.Anyway, if you don't propose to the Harris campaign team the specific things you wrote here, who will?

@futurebird Apart from anything else, the Democratic party/Clinton had a lot to do with locking up Black men in record numbers and then using respectability politics and looking down on and demonizing poor Black men to ignore the effects of systemic oppression and societal lack of care to sell increased oppression of Black boys and men who were framed as "super predators" by the likes of Bill "rapist" Cosby.

One of the things I've learned as a teacher is to be careful about how I place blame. Is "the class" being too loud... or is it just two people?Do I need to yell at everyone or just make eye contact with one or two and give a little glare?About 90 percent of Black men who vote will vote for Dems. If I'm a Democrat I'd ought to think of this group as pretty great and awesome. My major concern is that they show up."How do I help you keep being amazing?"

@fifilamoura It's pretty rich. Although the only positive reforms over this same period come from that same party. Democrats say that was the only way they could keep the republicans from doing worse. Can we move on? I hope so.

@WGAvanDijk Fair point. I'm just happy that Harris has NOT done the "lecturing the Blacks" thing like Obama. She does still lean into the whole "I send people to jail, Law and Order!" thing... and I don't know enough about the political balancing act to know if that is really worth it. But Harris has not singled out "Black Culture" which makes me hopeful. Just a little. And maybe there are still some white voters who need that comforting? IDK. I like to think not.

@futurebird absolutely right. The reality is, if any group needs a scolding it's white men and women. Take white people out of US Elections and the Republican Party was gone a long time ago, replaced by a truly conservative party and likely a actually liberal one.Since 1968 white people never give the majority of their votes to Democrats. And before someone sees this and tries to "yeah but not all white people," I'm a white male, I know it's not "all white people," it's just MOST white ppl.
