If you’re not on Glass.photo … why not?Just look at this photo from Dmitri. Glass is not Instagram. It is JUST photos. https://glass.photo/dmitri/54M8sezREoBVY7ZMsZcl19

That is a great layout. Does it integrate with ActivityPub as pixelfed does?@zkarj

@futuresprog I don't think so. It's a place for photographers and people who enjoy photography, not a network.I looked at Pixelfed a while ago and found it to be not quite social media and not quite photography-focused, though it has been suggested things have evolved a bit since. Not that I personally need anywhere else to put photos. I'm already on Flickr (for 18 years) for general sharing and now Glass for my best stuff, plus the occasional one here if I feel the urge.

@zkarj> It's a place for photographers and people who enjoy photography, not a networkIt's nice at times to visit places with no phone signal. I guess the same is true of websites that are places in their own right, with no social network integration : )> I'm already on FlickrAny sign of the ActivityPub integration they announced a couple of years ago?@futuresprog

@strypey @futuresprog I didn't know they'd said anything. Certainly no mention of it in newsletters lately.

@strypey @futuresprog but I'm not sure I understand the point of ActivityPub for everything.I know it's supposed to be the agnostic glue, but look what happened to RSS. Widely ignored these days and, I would argue, solving the same problem. There is always an app like Tapestry for those who want it. I personally prefer to look at Flickr when I want to look at Flickr... not have it crop up in between a Mastodon post and a news story.

@zkarj> look what happened to RSS. Widely ignored these days and, I would argue, solving the same problemMost people know it as podcasting, not by its own name, but RSS is one of the most widely used open protocols on the net today. It's main limitation is lacking support for replies. AP is essentially RSS+replies(1/2)@futuresprog

(2/2)> I personally prefer to look at Flickr when I want to look at Flickr... not have it crop up in between a Mastodon post and a news storyThen don't follow Flick accounts with the same account you use for those. Instead enjoy the freedom to see photos from PixelFed accounts while looking at Flickr, or to see photos from Flickr when you browse your PixelFed timeline.Imagine following all your favourite photobloggers, regardless of where they post, in your preferred photo browsing app.

@strypey @futuresprog my point was not so much RSS versus AP, but that RSS was… is… a similar kind of “glue” and yet, podcasts aside, is barely known about by the populace. I’m not even sure podcasts are widely *used* these days. They’re certainly more widely known, but even among my tech-friends few listen.

@strypey following photo-BLOGers would be a job for RSS. Having an extra account for following photographers is not so dissimilar to visiting different services. I’ll return to my core point… one tool to rule them all has never succeeded. I think it’s a logical outcome that trying to fit many uses into a single framework will simply degrade most or all of the intended experiences.

@zkarj > following photo-BLOGers would be a job for RSSFair point, and a good fediverse UX allows the same feed to be followed using RSS as well as AP (eg Friendica/ Hubzilla do this). But allowing comments on those photos to be federated OTOH, RSS can't do. That's a job for AP.(1/?)

@zkarj > Having an extra account for following photographers is not so dissimilar to visiting different servicesIt's the difference between many extra account vs. one, to follow the same range of photo feeds.More importantly, it's the difference between a Titter vs. a Mastodon. A monopoly service vs. potentially dozens of services competing on how well they serve your needs. With you liberated to choose the one you like the best, while still seeing feeds from all of them. (3/?)@zkarj > one tool to rule them all has never succeededI present 2 counter-examples; email and FarceBook. Both have worked extremely well. The different between them is laid out in the previous post.> trying to fit many uses into a single framework will simply degrade most or all of the intended experiencesI'm not sure how this relates to the discussion. Care you explain?

Yet they use them every day. Like other kinds of technology, the usefulness of open standards doesn't depend on people knowing their names.@futuresprog

(2/2)@zkarj> I’m not even sure podcasts are widely *used* these daysThat would be news to the almost 15 million people who listen to the Joe Rogan podcast *alone*;https://www.digitalmusicnews.com/2024/03/24/how-many-people-listen-to-joe-rogan-data/That's only one of dozens of podcasts with a massive following."As of 2023, 42% of Americans ages 12 and older have listened to a podcast in the past month, according to “The Infinite Dial” report by Edison Research."https://www.pewresearch.org/journalism/fact-sheet/audio-and-podcasting/@futuresprog
