The fact that aphids, who seem totally checked out of reality can pulse in unison and attack their predators some of the time in a coordinated way has shaken my whole world to its core...I still think they have no thoughts. But that only makes this even more unsettling.

"Oh you may eat me now Mr. Ladybird... but my calories will return to my daughters when they drink your child like a juice box. This is the circle of life."You see? Aphid thoughts? Too horrible to contemplate.

@futurebird why do you think they have no thoughts? I mean, they probably won't be able to think as we do, but still...

@Rik_Dhuyvetters Mostly because they have no reaction to being eaten.

@futurebird @Rik_Dhuyvetters Perhaps in the long view the species are in the part of an action movie where the hero-to-be is imprisoned but doing hard labor silently and implacably for years, eventually becoming the most muscle bound and impervious warrior. One day a mighty Aphid rebellion will bring the oppressive Formicidae to their knees.

@futurebird We know from robotics that many apparently complex behaviors can be replicated without "thought":- "move away from strong stimuli and towards weak stimuli" creates mouse-like exploration behavior- "when object detected, if hands are empty, pick it up; if hands full, drop it; if no object, wander" creates termite-like mounds.I'd suspect the attack behavior is a variant of flocking, and acquiescence to being eaten happens when the self-preservation sensor is bypassed?

@futurebird I believe that we, as thinking creatures, over-prioritize the value of thought. The complex instinctual behaviors of spiders, beavers, and pufferfish are beautiful, functional and valuable in themselves, without any need for an inner life.

@futurebird I’m just trying to get them off my eoniums while avoiding killing anything else. I’ve failed with the neem oil and soap mixture: can’t seem to break the cicle. #BlackWphids.

@futurebird I have not tried that. The eouniums are hardy enough to tape them, but it is difficult to reach for the aphids in between the leaves. With the soapy mixture y just power wash them, but they come back.
