@futurebird @impermanen_ If we assume that it has no scientific basis, *and* we allow that it works too often to be dismissed as placebo or coincidence, then presumably there is some inner sensitivity the dowser has that cannot be easily taught.

@futurebird Before the internet I had the notion to provide a dating service for weirdos. I wrote up a long questionnaire with questions about creativity and special interests. I hung up flyers all over Minneapolis, got a P.O. box, and left stacks of the questionnaire at coffee shops. I got six respondents, none of whom were a match for each other, and the project stalled out there. Part of the problem was I had no money and no outreach skills of my own.

@futurebird @copiesofcopies As a teenage artist in the 80s I once made a head-worn piece out of broken vinyl records and clear surgical tubing. Inside the coil of tubing I put water with green food coloring, so it would slosh around the tubes as I walked wearing the “hat”. I couldn’t think of how to pack it in my luggage, so I wore it to the airport and through security… to a point. An officer did stop me and asked what it was, and started to fret out loud about how to test it for drugs or explosives. As he reached for his walkie, I said “don’t worry” and I popped the seal and drank all the fluid. He got flustered and shooed me on through to my flight.

@futurebird Ah, I see about the whippits. I had a college roommate whose favorite way to get high “for free” was to go to a big grocery and abuse the cans of whipped cream right there in the aisle until security escorted him out.

@futurebird More frequently? Cat crime. I get woken by it many a night, though I typically fall asleep again soon after. With more intense alarm? Ant crime. They may not wake me often, just once every few years; but if I get woken up by ants, I will not fall back asleep, I am very awake now.
