Jetzt haben wir jeder ein #Interrail-Ticket und eine Reservierung für den Eurostar, aber unser Zug bis Frankfurt fällt leider wegen Hochwasser-Reparatur aus. Alle ICEs auf der Strecke, um genau zu sein. Und die alternativen Routen mit mehrfach umsteigen sind alle später da, als der Anschlusszug in Frankfurt geht. Müssen wohl entweder einen Tag früher los oder doch alle Tickets zurückgeben, wo's noch geht und doch fliegen. :/ ... Wann wird nochmal dieses Beamen erfunden? #AutorinOnTour

And so it begins … mit Verspätung und Aufenthalt im Startbahnhof wegen eingleisigen Zugverkehrs. Nachdem wir gestern schon die ersten 400 Kilometer mit dem Auto gemacht haben, um heute Abend am ersten Ziel zu sein.

Okay, die zweite Etappe unserer zweitägigen Anreise lief erfreulich ruhig. Geräumiger und komfortabler ICE 1, kaum Menschen. Und mit nur einer Viertelstunde Verspätung in Frankfurt angekommen. Jetzt haben wir sogar noch entspannt Zeit für Kaffee und Umstieg. ☕️🎉

Mit trotzdem noch 46min Verspätung in Brüssel angekommen und nachdem wir so den früheren Anschlusszug nicht mehr erwischt haben und der nächste ausgefallen ist, waren wir erstmal was essen. Ist ja auch ganz fein. :)

Pro-Tipp: Solltet ihr nach Bletchley kommen und Bletchley Park sehen wollen, geht einfach direkt vom Bahnhof rechts dem Schild nach. Es sind keine 5 Minuten. Falls eure Unterkunft woanders ist und ihr die Koffer noch eben abstellen wollt, geht dann den langen Weg und ggf wieder am Bahnhof vorbei. Alles andere ist eine Lüge, egal, was die Navis sagen. Da kommt ihr nur durch, wenn ihr ein Eichhörnchen oder eine schlanke Katze seid. Wir haben bisher 5 Wege gefunden, wie man nicht zu Fuß hinkommt.

A Lorenz SZ42, because Nazi high command would not talk via the Enigma machines but had their own more secure means of communication. Which was also busted, but they didn’t know back then. It was much more convenient to use than the Enigmas, because encryption and decryption would take place inside the device and the printed out messages were plain text again already. A bit like E2E messengers like Signal today.

Funfact we found out in the museum: the Russians took the Lorenz machines and used them themselves during the Cold War. … BTW: did anyone check for Lorenz encryption in Russian communications now? ;)

Another „funfact“: What helped most with deciphering the Enigma codes and hence breaking encryption for nearly all of the German communication were people who were too lazy or thought „oh, it‘s just the weather report“ and did use the same password (or 3-wheel-position) a second time or even over longer periods of time - like the name of their girlfriend or something. In the 1940s. Just like using the same password for everything today … #ITSec #Datenschutz #ITSecurity

My absolute favourite at the National Museum of Computing is the Hartwell Dekatron. The design is from 1947, to be a reliable machine to perform routine and repetitive calculations normally done by operators with desk machines. It was completed in 1950 and after about 5 years of dutiful service was given to a College to teach computing with it. They renamed it 'WITCH' (the Wolverhampton Instrument for Teaching Computation from Harwell). It‘s the oldest still running computer in the world. 💜

What you can’t hear in the picture is the lovely sound it‘s making, clickedy-clacking merrily away while calculating some table. 🎶💜 There are still people able to write programs for it - on paper strips! - and the handbook is also still there so it will be able to operate it for a long time. And yes, I have a recording of the sound. ;) #AudioF00
