Mastodon apps present the fediverse in a bewildering way. What am I doing wrong here? Both apps (tusky, fedilab) and www do this:I haven't looked in an hour or four, so of course there's a zillion new posts. Let's say I'd read to the top, prior. I come back, on app pull down, www scrolls automatically in tl;dr way. The apps present me with an inline LOAD MORE button. Clicked, it inserts new posts DOWNWARD, below, previous. Ok I get it, chronologically correct. But now my relative position is meaningless; how do I pickup where I left off? Impossible. Shouldn't it hop the focus to the most recently viewed post? Or approximately? The end result is reading forward, older to newer, then later newer to older (downward), or just go all the way to top/newest and read in reverse? None of this makes sense to me. I've been at it a year and can't puzzle it out. Maybe I'm missing something? Any hints?

@tomjennings Yeah, I've never met an infinite-scroll app that gets this right. Aside from my own! Experimental Twitter UI, back when people were allowed to experiment with the Twitter API. It even had an option to do forward chronological instead of reverse, showing new items at the bottom instead of the top. Worked great!

@jef Interesting. It just seems like a UI issue.

@tomjennings @jef you're looking for https://pachli.app. It's one of the first things I fixed.Content loads as you scroll (no "Load more" button) and your reading position is remembered and restored when you return to the app.https://pachli.app/pachli/2024/09/08/one-year-on.html#new-features describes some other features you might enjoy.

@nikclayton @jef Ok then! That was easy -- replying here and now using pachli. Obviously too early to comment but reading your blog, all I can say is wow. And thanks.

@tomjennings I don't see this in Fedilab (it does jump around a bit as it pulls new messages in, but restores my position after)...do you have this setting on?

@vt52 I had a lot of problems with fedilab crashing (10, 20 times a day) so I switched with Tusky. Someone else suggested there's a setting for this in tusky, but had already moved to Patchli, which does it "out of the box".

@tomjennings @jef you're welcome. And given that I can draw a line from starting online as 2:252/21.8 in the 80s to what I'm doing now, thank you too.
