Why is it that the only ecommerce websites with sane filters are those selling electronic parts (mouser, TME, etc)

@wolf480pl@mstdn.io electronic parts have concrete and fairly standardized specifications that are filled out by manufacturers, most other stuff doesn't, and that would mean ecomerce managers deciding on their what kinds of specifications to fill out and actually filling that stuff out when adding new products, which all things considered, isn't the best use of their time.I shop at one PC part store almost exclusively because they do fill out stuff for filtering that makes sense, but it's more of an exception than a rule.

@ignaloidas @wolf480pl Austria has a price comparison website with really good filters that started as a PC parts listing but (besides extending to many German and EU sellers) now does this for many product categories, with the same good filters in each category. I'm not sure how exactly they do it -- if their importance in the market means the sellers give them the data they ask for, or if they have staff doing this themselves and doing it properly -- but evidently it is possible.

@sqrt2@chaos.social @wolf480pl@mstdn.io huh, that's interestingI guess because their main profit driver isn't selling stuff but showing ads and refer bonuses, there's extra incentive for them to attract people to their site for things besides just checking prices for a specific item, they are incentivized to add extra stuff like that.

@ignaloidas If you had the offer data allegro.pl already has but with a better filter UI that allows selecting multiple options more easily, and doesn't refresh the website for every single value you select for a filter, that'd already be a huge improvement.

@wolf480pl@mstdn.io well then I guess they need to get a better search vendor (usually search also provides filtering)

@ignaloidas I'm guessing they roll their own - their primary product is the marketplace for others to sell their stuff, so it makes sense they'd focus on their own search & recommendation tech
