I wanted to understand why so many people think "crime is out of control" when nothing remarkable is happening. So, I poked around on an alt I have on facebook that I just use to browse. Facebook is packed full of "smash and grab" videos. These are often grainy security or phone camera videos of teens or young men. Mostly Black, but not all, doing petty theft. There are compilations! You can watch two hours of this stuff. 1/

Apparently a lot of over-60 white people who have never seen such crimes on their trips to the CVS eat these videos up like I enjoy "strange sea creature compilation" videos. Looking at the comments on these videos there are a lot of calls for the ner'do wells to be shot. A lot of lamenting how bad things have become. A sense that crimes never used to happen but now there are so many. Some of the people making these videos are just doing it for views and cash. 2/

But some of these shocking crime reels are propaganda with very dubious sources. There is also a variation on the smash and grab video where the evil thriving teen gets punched or hit by a customer or owner and people *really* like those, although many of them look fake to me. Heck some of the more absurd smash and grab clips seem to be fake. I wish seeing lots of videos of sea creatures meant that the sea creatures were OK and abundant and thriving. 3/

@tshirtman OK. But I watch tornado videos like every single day. I'm obsessed with tornados. But I don't think I have an unrealistic understanding of the danger they pose. I do get the desire to rubberneck at videos of scary awful things. But after seeing one guy run off with an arm full of bags of chips and sunscreen haven't you seen them all?

@tshirtman Someone really ought to shoot these tornados. But you can't do that anymore. Everyone is too woke.

@futurebird @tshirtman Do you watch tornado videos because you have tornado anxiety?I suspect these folks have self soothing behaviours rooted in affirming the dangers which cause their anxiety to grow.

@futurebird as a 57-year-old white person who grew up without a television, I was struck very early by how “real” the news on TV seemed and how manufactured it must be. Now the algorithm can select it for you, and that’s terrifying.

@futurebird Take a trip to NextDoor. OMG, crime everywhere in your neighborhood. And the "criminals" all seem to meet a certain profile.

@futurebird even if the videos were real, i will wager a large amount of money that they're crimes that have always been happening, it's just that there are SO MANY more cameras in the world, and old folks just hoover it up without even stopping to think one time about how their world has changed in a different way than they think
