I watched #longlegs the recent horror movie that has been receiving a lot of positive reviews. I don't get it. *why* is this film good?I've been an avid horror enthusiast since I was a kid and I've seen every single technique, every single trope, pulled off with more mastery in a number of other movies. Longlegs really isn't doing anything particularly well, not anything particularly new. It's like the reviewers have watched another movie altogether.(1/2)

Saint Maud (2019)Possum (2018)Vvitch (2015)Lords of Salem (2012)Silence of the Lambs (1991)The Holy Mountain (1973)...all these movies pull of certain parts that Longlegs attempted - but they do it well! They do it masterfully. They're well worth watching. Longlegs feels like a movie written, directed and shot by someone who has only ever heard descriptions of horror movies. Who is pushing the horror genre forwards nowadays? What should I have watched, instead of Longlegs? (2/2)

@catileptic Not a big horror fan here, but I'd suggest from the last years:- It follows (2014)- Men (2022)and 2 Korean movies:- The Wailing (2016)- Exhuma (2024)(I'm supposing you already saw movies like Get Out, Annihilation,...)

@vanecx yes, I've watched both Get Out and Annihilation. Thanks for the recs - haven't watched the others! The book that Annihilation is based on is so much better than the movie at pulling off both horror and sci-fi. And I'm not saying this in a "oh, books are better" snobbish way.The book is a whole different experience. Most notable of which, the book engages with the subject of what it's like to face an entity that you can not experience with your (human) biology / your senses.
