Google announced client-side scanning for Android. Border authorities in China can search electronic devices as well as collect emails, pictures, and videos of foreigners entering the country. No warrant needed. These searches can be conducted in case of emergencies - although it seems like there are no checks & balances in place to reign in or even track when this is being done. I watched #longlegs the recent horror movie that has been receiving a lot of positive reviews. I don't get it. *why* is this film good?I've been an avid horror enthusiast since I was a kid and I've seen every single technique, every single trope, pulled off with more mastery in a number of other movies. Longlegs really isn't doing anything particularly well, not anything particularly new. It's like the reviewers have watched another movie altogether.(1/2)

Google is removing the fact-checking metadata (ClaimReview) that allowed a debunking article to be tagged prominently, in the results you got when searching for an already-known false claim.Google claims, in their blog post, that this feature wasn't really used all that much: https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2025/06/simplifying-search-results . i felt very motivated to read "The Myth of Sisyphus" by Albert Camus. i'm struggling with finding (and creating) anchoring points. i'm trying to stay useful to others while struggling with loneliness. so it seemed like the best-suited philosophical text. (and i have to admit i really liked the entire "we must think of sisyphus as happy" sound-bite)what i realize is that i don't resonate with Camus at all. his writing slides right out of my focus. any recommendation for similar texts?

This year, I stopped consuming the feeds of Big Tech social media platforms. I still have my accounts, because a lot of activism & advocacy is organized & amplified there. My NGO is no exception (for now). I still consume the Mastodon feed regularly. As my overwhelm increased, I took breaks from short-form thoughts altogether, and read a few pages from a book when I needed to procrastinate or wind down.Reading about the same subject, in long form, feels relaxing. A relief for the nerves.
