@pluralistic I saw your book on accountants and your fantastic article on HP inks today, and I couldn't resist sending you this blog I wrote. It isn't exactly evil but I think you might find it curious : https://dm319.github.io/pages/2024_09_09_hp12_comma.html

@dm319 Interesting story! It would seem odd for HP to have written new code for that in 2023... I wonder how many 2023 machines exist.Ok now I don't have a 12, but a 16c, the "programmer" calculator. Variable word size and radix and lots of logical operations. I love mine, now 40 years old. They're physically almost identical. the 16c hasn't been made for some time, all are antiques. Do you have any insight, or hazard a guess: would the 16c firmware run in a 12?The 16c really needs silver oxide cells; modern ones barely last two weeks. In the 90s, they'd last 6 months. If so I'd be tempted to buy a deader off eBay for the key tops and convert a 12 to a 16....

@tomjennings Glad you enjoyed it! Yes it's very odd, and I wonder who and how it came about. Since the blog I've found out it runs on a 16 digit precision. Yes, you oddly can get a modern HP-12c (not this strange one) and flash it with the HP-15c CE firmware. The latest HP-15c (which is just on the verge of being sold out BTW!) has a secret HP-16c mode. Interesting idea about the keycaps - the old ones were double shot. There's also the DM-16L.

@tomjennings You can also get an old TI-83/4+ and flash RPN83P onto it. The author has recreated most of the functions of the HP-16c, 12c and 42s onto this app, and the cost of a second hand TI is fairly minimal. https://feddit.uk/post/16656367
