what would you say the minimum complexity is for a portfolio-worthy project for a non-junior developerI have the feeling I'm setting the bar way too high for myself

@monkyyy I have a projects section on my resume. I don't care if they ask for it, it's there

@deprecated_ii I wouldn't focus on complexity, but on differentiation. Mostly tools or stuff you made for yourself just because, instead of having the same tutorialized apps every junior has.

@MechaSilvio @deprecated_ii Can you get away with making stuff from YouTube tutorials to get a junior position?

@MechaSilvio the problem, so to speak, is that I can write a complete useful application in a couple days and have done so dozens of times to solve some problem or other. it's quite easy at this point, as long as I understand the problem, so it doesn't feel impressive at allmy larger projects are things that I either can't share the code for or are quite hard to explain concisely

@deprecated_ii just differentiate from "I made another generic React app". The exact content is not as important, it's more of an icebreaker or catching the potential employer's more technical managers' eyes

@deprecated_ii Any software that is either in active production, required cooperation to develop and maintain, or required review (even QA) would score higher on face value than complex projects. Two reasons: 1) You don't have to explain what the actually project is to someone who doesn't comprehend it. 2) The interviewer doesn't have to translate how your explanation of the complex project applies to their industry.I would prioritize projects, no matter how trivial, that clearly demonstrate you must work with people to accomplish objectives on your resume before your flashy projects. Laterally, and vertically. competency, "duct tape skills" are most of the time valued higher than "precision skills". "Able to learn skills" is valued higher than "Knows a bunch of skills" or "hyper fixates on single skill".

@deprecated_ii There are some head hunters on GitHub if you want to play the lottery. :strongest_shrug: No shame in being a technician temporarily, jobs a job. If you can do ratios (like apply ohm's law) you're set for many already. It's what I did before I was taken on.Job hunting is painful, second only to wife hunting.

Every job I've been accepted for has basically been exactly something I've already worked on and had in my resume. 😔 I'm not sure if they need to look into the complexity of your experience if they'll eventually get candidates who already have the domain knowledge of that type of product.
