I found a house centipede and the doorman helped me rescue it since if the wrong person saw it just strolling around the hall it might have gotten squashed. It's was the biggest one I've ever seen in NYC. And elegant being! I found a warm place near the building where it might be OK for a few more months into fall. When he came around and saw me struggling with a drink cup and the bug I was worried I'd need to explain but he told me "Those are good, they're predators they eat roaches."

@fembot About two inches. Looked like it had all of its legs. (they get a new extra pair with each molt)

@futurebird I never saw them until I moved to the Midwest for college, but they’re kind of amazing! I tried to describe them to someone from back home and could only think of the phrase I’d seen on computer game loading screens: “reticulating splines”. That’s what they look like.

@futurebird I have many of them at home. Between them and the massive spiders it's quite "gang of New-York" mood at home (tho I'm in the French countryside).

@futurebird yeah, we leave these guys alone in our house. The kids have even built a tunnel out of magnetic tiles for one that insisted on going across the carpeted living room regularly, and was likely going to get squashed by accident.

@rmflight It warms my heart so much when people are kind of house centipedes. They get such a bad reputation for all of the legs..... and the VERY rare occasions when they bite (because they are terrified!) but they are really elegant leopards of the basement with too many legs. Strange little heroes...

@futurebird Why have I ever watched the "Human Centipede" film?I can't read the word "Centipede" any more without thinking in its disgusting images.

@mina I have not seen that film and will not ever. I'm mad enough that I know it exists and the basic premise.

@rmflight @futurebird Quick history here:until a few months ago, I was afraid of those, and would likely squash them ...And then I read about it (on WP I guess) and now that I know they are safe for humans, and predators of stuff we don't really like, I'm fine with them crawling in our bedroom 🕷️ Maybe that's a trick for other people afraid of them...(and thanks to my SO for showing me the WP page :blobcatheart: )

@futurebird @fembot I wish i had ANY artistic ability, ‘cause we need* a new version of that meme. “How would a centipede wear pants: like this? Or like ghis?”&

@futurebird Even though my wife finds their movement freaky and unsettling, house centipedes are one of the few arthropods we don't kill or kick out for the reason you mention. They are voracious predators of vermin.Sadly they are apparently too sensitive to easily cultivate or ship, so no chance of usithem for pest control at large scale.
