Why is everyone hating on Mozilla Corporation for shutting down a Mastodon instance with barely any users? Doesn't it make sense that they should focus on making Firefox better? There are many, many great Mastodon instances. There's not that many good browsers that aren't Chromium-based./me ducks in anticipation of the Fediverse's fury

@ryanleesipes For whatever reason it's acting as the straw that broke the camels back, a mastodon instance ultimately doesn't really matter, especially a fairly small one. I think the issue is there's a lot of negative reaction to anything remotely AI related right now whether or not is justified is up for the individual to decide

@BrodieOnLinux I just... can't get there on any of this. Is Mozilla Corporation infallible? Certainly not. But experimenting with new technologies such as ActivityPub/Mastodon and Generative AI is what any tech organization (or open source project) should do to learn more about it and see what opportunities there are.The Firefox folks are working hard and making real progress to diversify their revenue beyond just Google. They compete against true monopolists (as classified by the US gov).

@BrodieOnLinux I'm not saying one should agree with every decision they make. But if you believe in open source software, open standards and an open web - they are an ally, not an enemy.

@ryanleesipes Ultimately Mozilla is a net good, and I'm not as anti AI as most other people. The discussion surrounding this is also probably a bit overblown for sure. I wouldn't go so far as to say the company should fall, but I can't read other people's mind.

@BrodieOnLinux yeah. I was just shocked to see my feed full of vitriol aimed at Mozilla. Has everyone forgotten what it's like out there? Open standards constantly under attack, competing against monopolists (as designated by the US gov) and closed platforms, leveraged to cut out third party applications.I want folks to direct their anger at the companies who deserve it. The companies that undermine the open web, open source and turn you into the product.(That's my rant 😅)

@BrodieOnLinux but, as always, I appreciate your take on this Brodie - and I do understand. These things make Mozilla seem like it's abandoning the open web.As an insider, I know that isn't true. But I understand the frustration.

@ryanleesipes I totally get it from your perspective, with any CEO change there's going to be some things that get shaken up. A mastodon instance with few users probably costs a lot more than it's worth
