I often get asked something like:"Why work on email clients? Isn't Gmail what most people use?"The answer: a ton of people use Gmail and O365/Outlook. So many that it is endangering the email standard. But Email is the most decentralized communication technology out there - and great clients help protect that. So that folks can have a great email experience, regardless of the server/provider they use.Protect email. Use Thunderbird.

Why is everyone hating on Mozilla Corporation for shutting down a Mastodon instance with barely any users? Doesn't it make sense that they should focus on making Firefox better? There are many, many great Mastodon instances. There's not that many good browsers that aren't Chromium-based./me ducks in anticipation of the Fediverse's fury

@BrodieOnLinux I just... can't get there on any of this. Is Mozilla Corporation infallible? Certainly not. But experimenting with new technologies such as ActivityPub/Mastodon and Generative AI is what any tech organization (or open source project) should do to learn more about it and see what opportunities there are.The Firefox folks are working hard and making real progress to diversify their revenue beyond just Google. They compete against true monopolists (as classified by the US gov).

@BrodieOnLinux I'm not saying one should agree with every decision they make. But if you believe in open source software, open standards and an open web - they are an ally, not an enemy.

@BrodieOnLinux yeah. I was just shocked to see my feed full of vitriol aimed at Mozilla. Has everyone forgotten what it's like out there? Open standards constantly under attack, competing against monopolists (as designated by the US gov) and closed platforms, leveraged to cut out third party applications.I want folks to direct their anger at the companies who deserve it. The companies that undermine the open web, open source and turn you into the product.(That's my rant 😅)

@BrodieOnLinux but, as always, I appreciate your take on this Brodie - and I do understand. These things make Mozilla seem like it's abandoning the open web.As an insider, I know that isn't true. But I understand the frustration.

@shauna add another wrinkle and MZLA (the Mozilla entity that houses Thunderbird) - has a co-governance model between a board and a Council, elected from contributors. This gives the community immense power (we can't approve a yearly budget without the Council's input, for instance). While it has been hard to have so many different stakeholders, I believe it has kept us honest and true to the mission of great open source communication software that champions open standards.

@BrodieOnLinux @killyourfm @thunderbird first question for any project should be "how do we make this sustainable?" What's worse - occasionally annoying your users or the project dying entirely?Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. Glad to see this strategy working for KDE.

It's time to explain Thunderbird's relationship to Mozilla again.Thunderbird is in its own legal entity - MZLA Technologies and is governed in part by a Community Council elected by and from our open source contributors.Thunderbird is currently 100% donation-funded. We do not receive any money outside what our donors give us.This is good for Thunderbird and makes us unique. Our whole structure only works to serve the interests of our users and contributor community.

Okay. We're entering 2025. Let me ask this again. What is something (a feature or anything) that you think email services (such as Gmail, Outlook, etc) are missing that you really want and would pay for?Asking for a friend.

Europe can lead the way on using open source. By supporting open source software, these projects become a better public good for all. That's the type of thing all governments should be doing.Europe stands at a critical moment for its digital future, Mozilla is joining a diverse coalition calling on the EU to champion open source.
