Sometimes I like to fantasize about my mother in laws face and how she would react if she knew I was letting my two-year-old listen to metal.

@twizzay we've never set any limits on what our kid can listen to. We've listened to our own music (Mostly metal). She's been listening to what she wants. From Hevisaurus and Ti-ti Nalle to whatever was the hot pop with her friends at the time. And never complained about or badmouthed the music she wanted to listen to.Now at 15-ish she listens to... metalcore. Can't complain, she helps us find new bands we've missed. 😂

@jago I like to think I have somewhat loose standards for music.I don't care at all what genre it is.I will probably encourage her to stick to music that is based in some kind of healthy reality.IDK call me granpa I guess but, I think while kids are young and impressionable, media that portrays the world in a way that is just not realistic feels like the wrong thing.Example:I don't want my daughter to grow up thinking that messages like 'guns drugs n hoes' are a normal or desirable reality. There will come an age where I think she'll be able to tell for herself, but in the early years the only limitations are on messages in the music/media.

@twizzay yeah, blessings of a relatively tiny language. "Guns, drugs and hoes" isn't very prominent theme in finnish music industry. And kid has learned enough English to actually decipher lyrics in the last two years or so, well after the start of media literacy training.I again failed to consider the cultural difference. :meow_facepalm:

@jago heh think nothing of it. I am a bigger instigator of that than you are, I am sure.I actually have some Finnish music, believe it or not. There was a Finnish girl visiting as a foreign exchange student in my high school, and we hung out a bit. I gave her a CD and when she got back to Finland she mailed me a Finnish CD with a bunch of folk songs. She wrote the lyrics down and the translations and everything. I actually liked it too. But, to this day, I have no idea what they are saying. I can sometimes point out what the song is about, though, just from having read her custom sleeve so many times.
