I think liberals sometimes ignore leftists because everyone has had someone criticize them for being insensitive- or problematic and that’s always an unpleasant experience especially if they have a point. “you really shouldn’t use the word ‘idiot’ it has a long ableist history” this is true… and I’m working on it. But my initial reaction to being corrected is never graceful. No way! I want to find a reason why I did nothing wrong— or if I was wrong? It wasn’t serious. 1/

I keep thinking back to a conversation with my conservative brother. 2018. I was trying to convince him that Tucker Carlson was showing signs of a dangerous right wing ideology. My brother who had met Tucker a few times, having some mutual friends (all MBAs know each other, getting to know each other is perhaps all they do in business “school”) simply couldn’t believe it and accused me of having blue hair (false) being bisexual (true) and being a raggamuffin who hates capitalism (disputed) 2/

He’s since realized I was right. But going back in time ai can’t think of what I could have told him then that would have gotten through. 3/3

@futurebird I've had people literally disassociating while I told them some of my research in Dutch politics.

@Heidentweet Everything in US politics on the right has gone to all the places I said it would and I hate that. We are at “mass deportation” and flat out lies about non-white legal immigrants, mostly because they aren’t white and that’s it. But I was called hysterical for such a long time “everyone you hate isn’t a Nazi, OK?” goddamit I wish I’d been wrong about the whole thing!

@gfidk Oh my brother is a liberal. He was never in danger of that. But, like many more moderate people he was slow to take this seriously.

@futurebird I think there’s also an element of people believing what they hear on tv over their own lying eyes, so it’s easier to believe the stereotype of the Tucker critic than it is to think about whether Tucker is worth criticizing

@futurebird has he said anything about your ability to figure it out long before he did? Usual story is that the Dirty Fucking Hippies and Capitalism Hating Ragamuffins see the problem early, but afterwards Conventional Wisdom invents reasons to keep on ignoring them ("right, but for the wrong reasons, we prefer to be wrong for the right reasons.").

@mansr @Infrapink @webhat The root of the issue is if the insult is in someway fueled by a notion of “lesser people” or is it that this person has terrible ideas, bad manners, and is selfish etc. When an insult stops being a description and starts being a whole category of people— when it starts to feel immutable and a means of sorting? I see value in backing away from it. And it’s a chance to be creative and spicific.

@futurebird Me too. I was also called a conspiracy theorist, but now the open racists anti-democrats are in government and in the process of derailing Parliament using the legal setups of the center-right over the last few decades (with support of almost all other Dutch political parties!) It's bitter to be proven right about the center-right and the general negligence of the rule of law by parties from the left to the right here. But as you wrote yesterday, this is not the end, it's a beginning. 🛠

@Infrapink @webhat @futurebird Yes, it all works out in the end (well, not for Brian), but in that particular scene, the constant corrections make the other guy forget what he was talking about.Anyway, it's always fun to use more obscure vocabulary. Are "ignoramus" and "nincompoop" still allowed?

@mansr @Infrapink @webhat But the point here was more about how it’s never fun to be criticized or to have your judgement of others criticized. My brother had listened to Tucker give a toast at the Harvard club — how could he be “racist” it had to be that I was reading too much in to it all. And I wish he’d been right about that.

@futurebird Word police are working on a flawed paradigm, Sapir-Whorf hypothesis that language affects thinking. You can't block bad thought by blocking bad language, because the thought precedes the language. The gay community has handled language by embracing it, e.g. the adoption of "queer."

@futurebird also modern liberals are barely to the left of Ronald Regan. Do we really need Blue fascists when we've already got all these Red fascists hanging around?

@futurebird In case it wasn't clear : I'm not trolling, I'm genuinely trying to understand. Are those two categories (liberal and conservative) not as opposed in US politics as they seem to be from popular or media discourse ?In Europe, they're not entirely exclusive (like Macron shown); but I was under the impression that in the US they were.

@lienrag In the sense of US media and most people in the US he'd be a liberal. I don't personally agree with that scale and consider many "moderate liberals" to be conservative. (and conservatives are off the scale of acceptable political stances) But that's just me. (and some other people)
