People complain about the existence of genres. "If it's good music it's good music! You don't need to categorize everything, man."I'll give their point credit that genres can close people off from appreciating something that doesn't fit what they expect. But I still think they're missing a value in genres. Musicians and fans sometimes find a new wavelength. They give it a name because there's something specific they like about it. They want more of it and they don't want it adulterated.

Fusions are great too. It's breaking the rules and bouncing vibes off of each other and finding something new. But then that new thing gets a name and people get protective again. Dub is one vibe. Add some electronic vibes, the dub fans might say it doesn't belong on a dub station anymore... but now it's dubstep, which is a whole new vibe.Sometimes you're in genre mode, sometimes you're in experimental mode.

The musicians themselves often denounce the genres they're in. That's fine, I don't want to police them. They're making the good music. Maybe they find a new fan base if they change. They don't owe us anything. But we're still allowed to enjoy The Cure as goth rock.
